@ohmomof2boys It is nice to hear your son loves Carlson. Those out of state waivers were pretty sweet and the
Shanghai experience sounds like an incredible once in a lifetime kind of experience. An amazing opportunity for sure.and one that I would love to have. Having said that, Ohio seems to be one State where OOS students are embraced and rewarded. Both Miami and OSU offer great scholarships to good OOS students.
The hike for enrolled OOS students is 5.5 percent, so the sequential large hikes you speak of may not be a fair assumption. As far as scholarship aid goes, CSM has its own aid in addition to the University aid. We got very late notice of a welcome scholarship from CSM. We were actually in Minn. by the time we heard.
My son is struggling with this now. He wants to study engineering and received decent scholarship $. But even with those $ the cost is high. He can go to Arizona State as a National Merit Finalist for free. He knows the Engineering program at Minnesota is a much higher ranked program but he would be in the Barrett’s Honors program at Arizona State and have zero debt. It’s a very hard decision.
Wow that’s a hard decision. Zero debt and an honors program slot seems like the winner!
@meltimnkids Not much to think about here… Go to ASU and Honors for FREE and enjoy the weather. As an engineer, he will be able to find a great job out of ASU. The University of Minnesota is not worth the price difference. It is not like your choice is between MIT or even Georgia Tech.
Thanks for the advice! Purdue was in the mix but he didn’t get a dime from them so unfortunately that’s off the table.
According to US NEWS, Minnesota is ranked 27th and ASU is ranked 42nd. add Barnett Honors and you are way ahead
Son had same dilemna with UofAZ and a host of top schools IL, WA, WI. He chose the free route and has not regretted it at all. Be aware that, as an engineering major, they can struggle to complete the Honors college requirements since most of them are not STEM related and the Eng degree program is intensive in those fields (at least at UA). Additionally, if they have a lot of AP credits, they will pass out of many Honors eligible classes.
As an incentive, we had him take out the max loan amount for students (varies by year, but roughly 6-7K) to help cover outside expenses with the caveat that if he graduates with distinction (3.5+) we will cover those loans for him. Made him very aware of the costs of school and the importance of keeping grades up.
So the OOS tuition hike looks like it will be close to 15%. The financial aid reads $30514 per year for tuition for 2018-19 school year, up from $26600. I spoke with admissions and financial aid and they said the Board of Regents meets in July to set the tuition, and there are some significant groups protesting and lobbying to keep the OOS hike from being that high. However, accepting enrollment is due by May 1, so we have to take the leap and hope for the best (or plan for $30K tuition). Doesn’t seem right that it is not set before we commit. I wonder if that is how all schools work?
I asked someone in UNM admissions to please look into this and let me know the OOS tuition for 2018. She sent me an email and said it would be $28,734. I had also heard they meet to set it in July but we are working on the assumption that this is a fairly accurate number.
I believe that 28,734 number is tuition only and does not include fees. I have some numbers here. $30,514 is about what I estimated including fees: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-minnesota-twin-cities/2051851-big-2018-2019-non-resident-tuition-hike.html#latest
Here’s the trend for last 8 years and projection for the next 4 years. For sure it is going to be an expensive school for OOS considering its location and ranking.
On top of that, this year it seems there is a cut on high stat OOS scholarship. So far I haven’t seen any report more than 10K National + 5k Gold. That will be 198k - 60k = 138K total for 4 years. XX XX X_X

Minnesota was an incredible deal for OOS students for many years. With higher cost and lower scholarships, I predict a fallout It is no longer a choice destination for many around here
We’re in a tough spot because DS’15 attends UMN. DS’18 has been visiting since his brother started and fell in love with it.
He is accepted into the prestigous DAAP co-op program at University of Cincinnati with a 24K scholarship but he continues to be fixated on UMN… We can afford it (no debt) but I’m really having a hard time with the value.
Also I’m concerned that the the overall quality and diversity of the university will go down. I understand why they flicked the switch to make it more affordable for in-state students - it’s the right thing to do. BUT most of the other similar level Big 10 (other than UW, UIUC, UMich - but let’s be real as they are all higher ranked) offer some type of GPA/ACT scholarship. I wonder if they can continue to attract high quality students without more incentives…
@singermom4 Cincinnati DAAP is one of the top ranked programs in the world… Hard to turn down a scholarship at one of the best. Obviously, if affordability at UM is not an issue, then you have to decide whether the extra money is worth it… I do not think it is. As you said, UM is a fine fine school, but not at the level of the others. It is however still slightly cheaper than those at least for now. Geographical diversity which is currently an issue will continue to be impacted, and this will include students choosing to go somewhere else. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out in the years ahead.
@Setter4life I know but DS’18 is not feeling comfortable about the co-op part of it UMN does have two internships required as part of the program and while Cincinnati has the long-running reptuation, UMN does seem to be trying to meet current market needs more.
I don’t think the university will hurt financially as they can easily fill from in state and reciprocal states. I guess it is a business so they have decided to trade-off ranking for the higher dollars.
I’m totally bummed by the tuition hikes. In 2017, UM OOS + $10k = UVA in-state, and for my kid a better fit, to boot.
Minnesota is still a bargain, and still a good place, but the extra cost is a disappointment.
