LAS honors

i got a thing in the mail from uiuc about how i was accepted to the LAS honors college of something or other... huh? i didn't apply to anything like that, but whatever

is it worth it? i mean, they have extra requirements, but it looks good.. is the honors program hard to get into..? in other words, what am i supposed to make of this?

I am guessing it is the James Scholars Program. Entry into it at freshman year is heavily dependent on your ACT score. When you filled out your application, there should have been a space that asked whether you would like to be considered for an honors program and you likely answered yes. For Campus Honors (enrolls 125) and James Scholars (apllicable separately to each college and enrolls a lot more per college), they send you the letter you received if you qualify. You can then do it or not do it. The program generally requires you to complete a number of general education type courses in each year. Some who get into it like it, some don't, but all will agree on one big advantage: if you are in the honors program, you get priority registration for classes and that can be a huge advantage particularly in freshman and even sophomore year because other students can often find when they go to register that the popular course they want either has all of its sessions already filled or the only remaing available session is at 8 a.m.

thanks

that's interesting. i don't remember checking the box for honors, as i didn't even know what it was back when I was doing my app... oh, and i didn't take the ACT. shrugs... interesting.

hmm.. maybe i should bump uiuc up from dead bottom on my college list?

There was an item on the app asking about the honors program and I should have said ACT or SAT score.

What kind of stats do you need for the honors program?

For James Scholars for LAS it is usually something like the top 15% of admittees in class rank and test scores; for engineering it is usually about a 33 ACT or 1480 SAT (exclude writing); for the agricultural college, it is only a 26 or 27 ACT (or comparable SAT). In other words it differs from college to college. As to the Campus Honors program, which usually enrolls about 125 (and invites about double that to assure getting 125), you are usually looking at those whose class rank and test scores are in the top 2% of the freshman applicants.
