Last minute artist gift ideas

HELP!!!

I need some last minute gift ideas for my little artist. Maybe art supplies of very high quality? Maybe something special?

You guys are artists... what would you want?

Best,
Wheaty

PS. Why do I always wait until the last minute? Ho Ho DOH!

An iPhone or an Android phone… LOL

And have it preloaded with the Brushes app for the iPhone or the Doodledroid app for the Android.

Or even better, an iPad with the Brushes app.

All of the above are a bit expensive. :(

But one can dream. :)

Another choice is the Wacom tablet for his/her PC/Mac (assuming there is some “art” software on the computer).

Oh yeah, a Wacom tablet… good call! I forgot about that one.

One thing my daughter never has enough of are Faber Castel Pitt Artist Pens, a set of four black (I believe the tips are varying thicknesses).

She’ll often need one new pack for a single project.

If you are not familiar with the site (and there are others like this one) [Creation Engine: Education Discounts on Software](http://creationengine.com) you are missing out. They provide academic versions of software at a fraction of the cost. For example, the latest version of Corel Painter 11 sells for around $300 to $500. But at creationengine, you can get Corel Painter 11 for $49 if you also purchase a Wacom Tablet at the same time. (otherwise $99).

All kinds of other software for artists and graphic designers are there as well. You’ll have to provide proof of being a student. We ordered TONS of software from there for my son (who is now a visual effects artist for the film industry). Note: each software publisher may have different rules for academic versions.

From the site:

Academic Affiliation Requirements

 1. To order from Creation Engine and receive our special educational prices, you must be a current student, faculty member or staff member of an accredited and degree-granting U.S. academic institution (grade school, high school, college or university). Home-schooled students also qualify for discounts. Parents may also place orders for students. We also accept school purchase orders.

Proof of Academic Status
Your order will not be shipped until a valid academic ID is received. However, you can place your order anytime, and we will place your order on hold until we receive your valid academic ID.

At a good art store , there are wooden people models, and wooden hand models. young artists can practice gesters and drawing porportions. Plus it lasts for ever.

I know I’ve always wanted a portable easel. [Portable and Field Easels - BLICK art materials](Portable and Plein Air Easels| BLICK Art Materials)

utrecht and/or plaza gift cards. prismacolor pencil set. moleskin sketchbook. micron pens.

Along with what others are saying, for the painter:
Masters Brush Cleaner
[Masters Brush Cleaner - Plaza Artist Materials](http://www.plazaart.com/products.php?page=4356&a=3&dept=6&manufacturer=6832)

Canvas

Gesso

also, charcoal, lead, erasers, a nice portfolio

ETA: books of art from favorite artists. I add a couple to my son’s collection every year.

At Michael’s yesterday i saw 2 watercolor pads, $70 and $40 depending on size. Don"t know the brand, but D recognized it.

Wow, some excellent suggestions posted here!

I rush ordered a Wacom from Creation Engine (thank you and thank you!) and got some really nice Grumbacker (sp?) brushes and the Faber Castel Pitt Artist Pens.

I also got her these two books on photography that some of you might find interesting:

Thank you all for the kind suggestions!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to all!!!

Wheaty

So Wheaty…

How did the gifts go over?

Digmedia,

The gifts went over just fine. My daughter likes the brushes and the Wacom but what surprised me was how much time she’s spent with the above mentioned photography books.

The best present for me was the above link to Creation Engine! We’ve gotten most of my daughter’s computer stuff from her school’s bookstore but their software selection is tiny compared to Creation Engine. I’ll be able to save a bunch from this discount site! Thank you!!!

Best,
Wheaty
