Last Minute Nervousness Re:UMich Decision

My D already paid the deposit, thought we were 100% set on UMich. Now at the last minute is wondering if she should have considered Admission to UCLA . She is accepted there as a Business Econ. Major vs. having to fight to get into Ross via regular admission process near the end of freshman year. She'd have maybe 12 more credits before admission at UCLA vs. Michigan, which would leave her just shy of Sophomore standing by a couple classes. I'm still telling her UMich was the right right choice, even if she doesn't get into Ross (could still major in Econ. at UMich). Anybody want to provide an opinion? UCLA could be an option until May 1 deadline.

UCLA’s Business Econ program is not equivallent to Ross, it is equivallent to Michigan Econ. Both Econ departments are roughly the same. If she prefers UCLA over Michigan, she should go there.

Before applying to colleges, we looked seriously at UCLA (just down the street from close family), but neither one of my daughters felt comfortable there. It’s a big school that feels like a big school, unlike U Mich…which is a big school that feels smaller than it is. Also, UCLA just seemed to have more cliques. Whenever we visited U Mich, people were generally friendly and helpful. Our impression of U Mich turned out to be accurate, D has had a wonderful year there socially and academically.

I’m not familiar with the business/economic programs at either school, but I can say that the academics at U Mich have surpassed my D’s expectations. But both U Mich and UCLA have excellent reputations. The weather, of course, is better in LA.

It’s hard to pick the place you want to spend the next four years at, but like with other important decisions, sometimes your first inclination is ultimately the best path…rethinking things too much can muddle things up.

Good luck and whichever way she goes, it will work out fine.

had the same positive feel about people at UMich. UCLA/Westwood is perhaps more cosmopolitan, and a pricier neighborhood. Michigan felt as though you did not have to be part of the “chic” scene to be included. As a Bus. Econ. admittee at UCLA, my D would have no problem getting accounting and finance courses as well as economics. As a UMich Econ. major I still think she could also get accounting and finance courses through Ross if room was available in the course after the Ross students subscribed, but I’m not sure about that. Then again, she could even get into Ross, which is the best alternative . Worst alternative is answering the business job interview question : “You went to Michigan, how come you didn’t go to Ross?”

even the worst alternative is a good one. With or without Ross, a UMich education is first class. If my D goes to UCLA she forecloses on even the opportunity of getting into Ross. You can’t be afraid to work hard and take a risk.

^^^Exactly pleaseadvice. We live in an extremely competitive world right now. She might as well get used to it sooner than later. She should go to Michigan and become one of “the leaders and best.” I wish her the best of luck in whatever she decides.

If she likes UCLA more, she should go there. Going there certainly won’t prevent her from being successful as long as she is willing to work hard.

pleaseadvise, many Econ majors at Michigan never apply to Ross because they simply like the intellectual, philosophical, analytical and quantitative nature of Economics. Business is just…well, you know, Business. If your daughter maintains a 3.5+ GPA as an Econ major, she will never need to explain why she majored in Economics. Michigan’s Econ department is ranked as high as Columbia’s and higher than Brown’s, Cornell’s or Duke’s.

thanks A., that helps confirm my own view.
