Hi, this is my last thread ever, and my last chance. so lets see. please help me out.

Hi,

I am enrolled in an internship for international studies
I tutor African Refugees
I have taught poverty stricken children in India(for 1 week, came to about 50 hrs)
I have protested against poaching with the same organization
I have 48 hours of service at a library
I was the founder of a school band in India
I played guitar for a local band and we got pretty popular regionally, in fact ,it was ONE of ONLY TWO BANDS chosen to play with the popular cover band Bad Fish on their show from ALL of Pittsburgh
I am in Model UN
I am in French Club
I am in Drama Club
I have been in Poetry Club
I am an actor in school plays
I am generally a more artsy person, and my Counsellor says I was meant for Brown
I am on the Highest Honor Roll
I am part of the National Honors Society

My hobbies include horseriding, snowboarding, guitar, piano etc
I have studied abroad in high school (India)
I am the founder and president of the Animal Rights Society and Political Awareness Leauge at my school

The thing I feel that could hurt me is I took all my AP’s in my senior year, so I dont have any AP scores yet, but I will have that explained, because I studied abroad, when I came to America, I had to take certain required classes before I could take AP, so I couldnt take AP’s before this. I twas just NOT POSSIBLE. But I have a letter explaining that from the counsellor.
If I write some good essays do I have a chance?
I have started a clothes charity in collaboration with the local IKEA to raise winter clothes for Burmese/African refugees
I have arranged a rally about Animal Rights in the town square thingy and it will happen in about two or three weeks, before I apply to Brown, and it may actually recieve some news attention
I go to an underrepresented suburban school. In fact, nobody from my school has EVER EVER been to Brown. and this year, nobody except me is applying to Ivy’s at all.

Your ECs are pretty convoluted and don't seem to point out specific passions. Make that show in your application. Aside from that, your SATs are pretty low. Don't know if you have time to retake. All we can really say, though, is take a shot at it and pray.

oh man, I'm sorry but I might have to come down a little hard on you. One, there are 10 kids applying ED to Brown in our school this year and they all have over 4.3 and had taken 10+ APs weighted gpa and either 2200+ or 33+. Secondly, it doesn't help at all being an indian male as you're considered a majority of the applicant in comparison to the national %. You do have some unique ECs, but they're kind of all over the place. Where are your SAT2s? Try improving your SAT1 try ACTs, best of luck =]

no actually. he/she must be talking about his/her own school. at my school, there is actually NO ONE, NO ONE at all applying to Brown. Nor has anyone been accepted in the many many decades the school has been around. I dont think anyone has ever ever applied lol. I told you, its wayyyyy underrepresented in the college frame. But even though I'm Indian, doesnt the fact that my school is so underrepresented kinda help?

also, I though Brown was the sort of college that looked at the SAT's. but not quite as much as the other Ivy's. Isnt Brown the school that looks at the person, not the score?

Ah, he phrased that poorly then, and made it sound like he knew you personally and was correcting you on the number of applicants of your school. Plus he's also from PA.

It's holistic, yes, but you have to remember that everything counts because of that. You need all the support you can get to make you the most standout candidate. And while it may consider SATs "less important" than other Ivy League schools, it is still in the Ivy League, so they matter.

School representation is not as important as region representation, and your ethnicity's representation within that region.

Yes, a bunch claim that, but there are some Ivy League schools that do indeed have cutoffs for SAT scores, though they don't publicize that. Once you are past that cutoff, it's holistic. At least, that's what one of the men who spoke at my informational session at Brown said.

Ask the Brown rep. I said I don't know, though if I had to wager, I'd say Harvard, Yale, and probably Princeton. Maybe Columbia to a lesser extent; it probably won't get you dropped off the radar, but it puts up a red flag, type of thing.

Sounds like Brown marketing to me - I am sure they do something similar, though at all top colleges, the 'cutoff' soft or hard, would vary with applicant profile...
