College counselor told me National Merit is in its last year for high school students and that they will have a new scholarship program for college kids next year. Makes me wonder if another corporation will pick that up or what? Any thoughts? National Merit has been doing this for at least 30 years haven't they? I remember the program has been around since I went to college!

@Rdtsmith…I haven’t seen or heard anything like what the counselor said, and I seriously doubt the NM program is going away. I imagine what he/she heard is that there will more than likely be some modifications to the program as the new PSAT and SAT tests are introduced in the next year or so. I’m not sure what the new scoring on each test will look like, so it’s possible that all the historical data on state cutoff scores, confirming SAT score, etc. could all change.

FYI, the PSAT will change starting next year

The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955, so after 60 years, I don’t see them cashing it in. Regardless of the way one feels about their methodology, NMSC is an institute in the higher education process. I’m proud that my daughter is a National Merit Scholar!

Mine is as well this year! Well she said they will be focusing on a new program next year for kids already in college. I should ask her where she read this!

Changing some…yes Going away…nope
