Late letter of rec - how screwed am I?

Hi, so a few days/a week after the College Match deadline I got an email from Stanford about axess and I decided to check my application status (one of the few match schools I applied to that allowed me to check the status of my application materials). It turned out that my fee waiver and my second letter of recommendation were "credentials not yet processed". I went on naviance to check the status of my letters of rec and one said "completed" and the second, sure enough, said "in progress". My second letter of rec was sent in a few days before the deadline so I was a little worried with what was going on, though it was admittedly submitted much later than my first letter of rec so I wasn't freaking out.

I talked to my counselor and she assured me that "in progress" meant that the letter was still being processed by the colleges they were sent to. Over this past weekend I noticed that my fee waiver was processed but my second letter of rec wasn't. That was when I knew something was wrong. On Monday, on an impulse, I decided to talk to the person that is in charge of our registrar. Turns out "in progress" means that the letter is actually still being processed by our counseling center! (I'm not too mad at our registrar - we have only one person manning the registrar for a class of 500 seniors). Ultimately, the second letter was sent practically 2 weeks late. (I hate myself for being naive enough to have believed my counselor. No one ever told me that all letter of recs go through our school's registrar. Why couldn't have I had the sense to talk to the registrar sooner!?)

This is a little long winded but this entire situation has been chewing me up inside. I feel like I was screwed over by something that was really no fault of my own. I actually went to the bathroom today at school and started crying. I feel like I'm begging for consolation but I honestly want to know: how detrimental is an incredibly late letter of rec?

Thank you (and regards to all my fellow questbridge finalists!)

It shouldn’t be detrimental at all. Colleges know that recs are beyond the control of applicants. A quick email could work wonders. In fact, one of the partner colleges has been badgering me about materials I already submitted. They WANT to review your application b/c you are a finalist. Good luck Dec. 2nd!

Urgh… I hope so…

Thanks for the reply.
