So it seem like pretty much every freshman I've talked to had to take at least one late night class, but I'm still a little worried. I know the campus is safe, but I'm not thrilled about having to walk back up to Sutherland at 8:30 at night, especially in the winter when it gets dark very early. Any other students ever have to do this? Are there still enough people walking around that it doesn't seem spooky?

Hopefully though there will just be someone else in my class living in my dorm who I can walk with.

I never lived on Upper Campus (will be this year, though!) but I had late night classes and found walking back to Holland to be fine… Although, that’s not at all the same. However, I will say that I’ve never felt threatened walking in Oakland at night, and I’m even talking about the times I’d been in South Oakland around 2am. Not necessarily enough experience with Upper Campus to say for sure that it’s the same up there, but I can’t imagine it being much worse.

But keep in mind, there are shuttles that run from right outside Cathedral, on Bigelow, to upper campus. They run about every 10 or 15 minutes, and run until well past 9:30. They’ll drop you right up on Upper Campus, so if you don’t feel comfortable walking you can take those!

DD had night classes when she lived in Sutherland and took the shuttle sometimes. Other times she just walked with other people. According to her, there are usually other people around. AND there are paths that you DO NOT take up the hill because they are not safe. It’s pretty well lit if you walk up past the Peterson arena.

Oakland/Upper Campus are REALLY, REALLY safe (seriously, this is coming from a girl). I’ve wandered around campus at all hours: night (6, 8, 10), late night (midnight, 5am) and daytime. While I obviously don’t recommend wandering through South Oakland, you’ll be TOTALLY FINE walking the main paths/roads from campus back to Sutherland at night around 8:30 or 9:00 on the weekdays/weekends. Even in the winter when it’s dark/cold there are a lot of street lights. Also there are always events and clubs meeting around campus late at night (I used to go to 9:00/10:00 meetings) so there will DEFINITELY be lots of other students out and about. And like others have said, if you ever do feel nervous, just take the shuttles, they run till 2am I think.

Have you already scheduled your classes? I didn’t have to take a single class past 6pm my freshman year. But it should still be fine. I was involved in clubs that lasted til around 9:00 and I always walked. You can always take the shuttle if you don’t feel safe walking.

Just to reiterate what everyone else has said, the main parts of campus are totally safe well into the night. Most organizations have meetings at night anyway (usually around 9:00), so there are plenty of students out and about late at night. Also, all of the main parts of campus are well lit and those blue security lights/help buttons are everywhere.

But does anyone have any experience with getting back to off-campus apartments late at night? I’m living on S. Millvale next semester and will have to take a Port Authority bus and walk a couple blocks to get back home. I imagine it would be okay by myself but it’s outside the vicinity of campus so I’m not totally sure…

Looks like you’re in the N. Oakland/Shadyside area? It’s a pretty nice neighborhood, especially with the hospital, and all the professors who live there. I’ll be living off of Ellsworth and don’t anticipate problems/never had issues visiting friends who lived there or further up on Melwood. I’ve only ever been up there on weekends, but I’ve never had a problem thus far. :)

Yeah, my friend who already lives there told me she felt pretty safe going getting back home at night. It’s just a little quieter than Oakland and outside the general security of campus. It should be okay but I just want to be safe!

Except on Weekends! It’s quite loud (not loud…maybe boisterous) until late (2am?). It’s because a lot of frats and party houses are in the general area.
