University of Pittsburgh Safety

I've never lived in a city, when I visit them (for the day) I enjoy it but what is it like at night. Is it safe at night to walk home from the library or a party. What time is considered to late to walk home by yourself. I heard a rumor that the free bus transportation wont exist any longer is there any truth?

At night, Oakland is pretty much like daytime, but a little darker! :D Honestly, I think with a bit of caution, you will be fine to walk around campus at night up until around midnight. Even later would probably be fine, but I would avoid the bar areas. Also, I think the further you are off the beaten path, the less security there is (ex, between upper and lower campuses, Schenley park area, south of Oakland toward town, etc). It is always better to walk in a group, but the library and many hangouts are so close to the dorms and there are so many people out at night that I don't think safety is a big issue.

I agree that safety is not a huge issue. Just keep in mind that it is a city. Where did you hear about the free public transportation changing? Actually it's not free because in the list of fees transportation is one of them so the students do pay. Do share what you know. Our student definitely takes advantage of the buses.

at night the street are well lit
the streets are crowded with students wandering around at night as well
the campus security shuttle will transport students throughout campus for free, day and night
at night- whether in a city or quiet, deserted campus, students should always follow safety procedures
stay in well lit areas, walk in groups or follow a group or others
take the security shuttle or ask security to walk you home
pitt is as safe or safer than anyother college campus
