Night classes & safety walking

Son just returned from a very positive FASET 2. Registration was a bit of a challenge due to scheduling conflicts for certain classes, but he is definitely ready to attend in Fall.

He has a couple of classes/study groups/labs that will take place anywhere from 5:00 P.M. and end as late as 10:00 P.M. on at least two nights per week.

The orientation did a very good job of encouraging students to walk with other students at night or take the shuttle. Sometimes though, this may not be practical or the students in his night classes may not have their dorm on the same side of campus as he has his.

How safe is it to walk alone on campus anytime after 6:00 P.M. or after 10:00 P.M. to either the East or West side dorms?

On campus is very safe. There’s only been one armed robbery on campus in the last ten years, so that’s 2 (two students in one robbery) out of 40,000 students that have been on campus in that time, or 99.995% probability of not being robbed on campus. That’s safer than most police stations.

Now off-campus is a different situation.

Even at 10pm there are still a lot of people walking around on campus. I myself used to jog around 11pm a couple nights a week. It’s quite safe.

Thank you for the great feedback.

Being out of state it is often difficult to understand the “true” situation regarding the robberies and other problems surrounding GT and how they translate to the actual campus. Hearing from people actually at GT is very helpful!

I agree 10pm isn’t very late and there are plenty of students out. The campus is well lit and there should be no problems with security.
