Late start on extracurriculars?

I am going into junior year and I haven’t really committed to anything yet? Will colleges will admire something I did for only 2 years (senior and junior year).

You do what you can - get involved.

Many schools won’t even notice - they are on a GPA/ACT bent.

So yes, some will notice. Did you babysit, ref soccer, anything?

If not, it’s ok - look ahead, not backward.

At this point all you can do is to start to get involved in ECs you care about and work towards making meaningful contributions.

Keep in mind that any part-time job or activities outside of schools (ex. at a church, hospital, library etc.) also count as ECs.

If I commit to an extracurricular for 1.5 years right before college applications, do colleges find that a sufficient time?

Admissions officers will see that you started junior year but that is all you can do at this point. Certainly it is better than having no ECs.

What HAVE you been doing the last two years? Just classes and studying? Please clarify.

You ask if colleges will admire your activities and then if it is sufficient. I don’t think you understand why colleges want to see extracurriculars. Your ECs are part of what describes you. They show what you value and have chosen to spend your time on. They also show if you are the kind of person who is a leader or if you are deeply into something.

You obviously aren’t deeply committed to anything yet, but what to do like to do? This isn’t a check-the-box type of thing where what you do could be considered sufficient or not. At this point just get involved in what you find interesting and do what you can. You can’t go back and change the past.

I want to add, that we have been dealing with the pandemic the past year and a half and every one is on a different page with that. Do what you can going forward and try not to worry what may have been out of your control the past two years.

I agree that the pandemic has really impacted ECs for a lot of people. Don’t sweat it, but do try to find something you really love and get involved now.

COVID is a huge factor.

Don’t do anything just to get into college. If you have any interests you want to pursue, by all means do so.

Do you have family responsibilities or work? Those count a lot these days, too.

Don’t worry. These are strange times and colleges understand that.
