I want to independent study for Calc BC in order to make up for some B’s in math that I got sophomore year and first semester of this year, junior year (I stopped being lazy this semester). I feel like I can pretty confidently get at least a 4, probably a 5, judging by my understanding and the average score at my school (4.7 last year) on the AB test. Is it worth it to study BC and risk a 3 or 4 or should I save that for senior year and just do well on AB while focusing my attention to studying for other AP tests?
Is it going to be treated like a class and factored into GPA? In not I don’t see how it will make up for sophomore year. Colleges use your GPA and ACT/SAT scores, not AP scores when looking at admittance. You can look for individual colleges, but I don’t think most care about your AP score until you’re accepted in order to give you credit or placement. AB Calc will serve just as well and I would focus on doing well on that and other AP exams.
Save Calc BC for senior year. Work on getting A’s for the rest of Calc BC. Study for your current AP tests.
Like scmom12 said, they don’t use AP scores for admission.
Did you take AB? If not, what does the average score matter to you?
Did you take regular calculus already?
I agree that it doesn’t seem like self-studying, even for a high AP score, will offset your transcript grades. Consider an online or college-level calculus course if possible, then you can get separate transcripts or add on to your HS transcript with permission.
