Thanks for the info.

The Biology list is essentially useless because it doesn't specify a department's quality in one (or more) of the various branches of biology.

Ecology and evolution, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Developmental, Neurobiology, Biological Oceanography?

any ranking that doesnt include LACs is moot.

I agree with Huskem. Undergraduate rankings for individual subjects doesn't make sense. Gourman is great when it comes to graduate rankings, but I don't think it is possible to rank undergraduate departments. Anyway, from my limited knowledge, here are some top Biology and Physics departments for undergrads:

BIOLOGY
Amherst College
Bowdoin College
Brandeis University
Brown University
California Institute of Technology

A couple of "lesser known" schools with excellent physics programs are Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc. and UC-Santa Cruz. Both of these will be smaller and more undergrad-focused, in comparison with some of the big public research powerhouses.

For biology, 100% of the universities (non-LACs) in Alexandre's list are also in the Gourman list. For physics, 85% of the universities in Alexandre's list are also in the Gourman list.

This supports the idea that the Gourman rankings have validity.

I think it does make sense to rank undergraduate programs although the criteria are different from graduate programs. Individual undergraduate programs within a university or LAC are not uniform in quality.

Collegehelp, I have no issues with Gourman. In fact, I agree with his graduate rankings. However, it is much more difficult to rank undergraduate programs than it is to group them together. And I personally think LACs are just as strong, so they should be included too.

For physics, postgrad degree preparation is especially important, since most cutting-edge research is done by PhDs. Alexandre's list does not include three of the undergrad schools that are in the top-ten (by percentage) of future PhD producers:

NM Institute of Mining
Reed College
Marlboro College

For completeness, his biology list does not include these top-ten (by percentage) future PhD producers:

Swarthmore
Kalamazoo
Earlham
Harvey Mudd
U of Sciences Philadelphia
Grinnell

Ya see, that's the point I made earlier! U of the Sciences apparently has a great Biology program that produces eventual PhDs, but the school offers few courses in Botany, Ecology and Evolution or Zoology. Today there's just too much diversity in the field of 'Biological Sciences" to group BS programs generally.

you guys must be kidding =(...last time i checked only the HYPSCM were even considered, all other schools are just TTT
lol...don;t wrry...all schools are about the same just choose based on personal preference =D gl!

What would you guys consider the very highest tier (say maybe 5 colleges in the top tier) for Physics and Bio at the undergrad level? [Including LACs]

If you want you can rank schools in the tier if the differences aren't negligible.

there must be a reason why us news doesn;t rank undergrad majors o.O...i mean if it was possible, i'm sure they would have already capitalized on that already

Would anyone post up the Applied Physics Undergrad Gourman Report rankings? Thanks.

In the Gourman Report, it is called "Engineering Physics".

Princeton
Cornell
U of Kansas
U of Oklahoma
Colorado School of Mines
Texas Tech
Stevens Institute of Tech
U of Tulsa

Does the Gourman Report have ranking for Botany or zoology, if so, could you show me them please.
