Latin Honors Cutoff

does anyone know the cutoff GPA for magna and summa in CC & SEAS? who gets to wear those medallion and ribbons on class day?

My year, in SEAS, it was something like 3.63 / 3.85 / 3.95.

The ribbons are for Phi Beta Kappa, or the engineering equivalent Tau Beta Pi.

wow^^^^

Denzera, does SEAS have grad inflation? 3.95 seems very high for summa cum laude. top 5% right?

of note, they look at top 35% of gpa’s and bestow honors on 25% of people. my year for the college the floor for cum laude was in the high 3.7s. i had a friend with a 3.82, however, that didn’t get any awards. they do take into consideration outside factors beyond mere gpa.

i’m pretty sure of those numbers, Cali. my 3.88 was good for magna but there’s always a handful of IEOR kids who take easy Stat or OR classes for some A+'s. You’ll see a dozen or so over 4.0 every year.

^^ What was your major?

and are you saying that all Operational research majors have it easy?

I was applied math. the valedictorian was from my department.

IEOR people have the highest GPAs in SEAS. The Salutatorian my year was an OR guy. The Engineering Management Systems major (in the IEOR dept) is the sole ‘joke major’ in SEAS and it sucks up a lot of the laziest guys.

i slightly disagree with denzera…while it is well recognized that IEOR is easy, I can imagine that many who end up in that major still don’t do very well…there’s a big selection bias that dictates who ends up in that major.

in contrast to denzera’s year…my year’s valedictorian was from the electrical engineering department and the salutatorian was a fellow biomedical engineer. both of them had gpas above 4.0

Their classes have a higher curve, Shraf. Seriously, ask anyone - the IEOR dept consistently has the highest GPAs in SEAS.

If you want to tell me that’s because they’re smarter and harder-working than the rest of us, including the BMEs and Chem-Es, well, I suppose it’s your opinion against mine for that. But I’m quite certain of that stat. I suppose some years a bumper crop within a small department might end up higher but your OR or EMS guys will take the crown, so to speak, most of the time.

ieor also seems to have the most blatant cheating of the engineering classes.

just wondering, what else do they look other than gpa when deciding honors?

i was trying to make the argument that they aren’t particularly smart or hard working so even though their classes are easier they still don’t necessarily do well. basically all the IEORs i knew were girls who used SEAS as a backdoor and would have been crushed in any other major

okay so I know that OR stands for Operational research. BUT what does the IE in IEOR stand for?

Industrial engineering?

…correct

" just wondering, what else do they look other than gpa when deciding honors? "

anyone? and when do you find out if you are selected into Tau Beta Pi?

It’s a strict GPA cutoff for honors.

TBP announcement is usually made to invitees in december or january and initiation is in february.
