Is there a laundry service that picks up/delivers to dorms?
There are coin operated laundry machines in the dorms.
You can probably find one. Google.
The ones I know about are in SF. Might be a business idea for someone.
Thank you for responses. Yes, have googled and yelped to no avail. Pretty common option (whether for occasional use or whole semester) on many campuses so a little surprised there is not one here… yet
Most students do their own. Maybe says something about the culture of the school (and average wealth of students) that it isn’t common.
I see from another thread you are a parent. Teach your kid to do laundry, or have them Google how to. A kid with a laundry service in college will be seen as a bit spoiled and privileged by their peers. It isn’t necessary.
My niece was offered a laundry service at her (rather affluent) school. She thought this was a wonderful idea. My sister told niece she could pay for it herself ($350/sem) or learn to do her own laundry.
My son said the easiest part of college was doing laundry so spend this summer showing your student how to do it themselves.
This was a simple question. No need for all the judgmental responses. Kid knows how to do laundry. And knows how to google (do you own stock?). Just asking whether anyone knew of a service… Jeez.
@LCali511: You are correct that I am guilty of jumping to that conclusion that your kid does not want to do their own laundry. I guess most CC posters cannot fathom why a service would be necessary for a college student and I am one of them.
I was waiting for my name to be called at a restaurant in Foster City a few months ago and I decided to kill some time and go into the laundromat next door. Now I haven’t used a laundromat since college 30+ years ago. I was amazed that the price was $5 for washer and $5 for dryer. I sort of recall back in the 80s that it was $1/$1. I don’t know what the UCB coin machine prices are, but if it’s $5/$5, that $350 per semester option if it’s available somewhere starts looking like not too bad of an option lol.
@ProfessorPlum168: My son attended UC Davis and graduated last year. The washing machines were $1.25/load and dryers were $1.00/load so a bargain compared to the Laundromat and they use a Laundry card that can be refilled with as needed so no coins needed.
It looks like UCB has the same system using Laundry cards: https://cal1card.berkeley.edu/students/laundryvending
It’s a good question. E&R Laundry has campus plans for several New England colleges; they pick laundry bags up weekly from the residence halls. I don’t know of anything for California.
@ProfessorPlum168 I agree. The basic laundry service at Wellesley is $650 for the year which is about the same as the cost of doing it yourself, per your calculation. The upgraded plan is $950 and includes bedding and dry cleaning.
@LCali511 My understanding is that laundry service is most commonly used in the freshman year. Some colleges have up to 50% of students signed up for the service and for other colleges, it’s relatively rare. If you’re not able to find a service at your kid’s school, I’m guessing it’s not so common. I personally think it’s a great idea. Of course our kids know how to do their own laundry—that’s not the issue. I hope you can ignore the posters who feel free to offer their unsolicited advice.
Yes, thank you – I can ignore, and I can laugh as well A quick search showed a service at Cal Poly, and I have seen such services at many other schools, including my older child’s alma mater, so am a bit surprised nothing is popping up for Cal. I think it’s often looked into for freshmen, as mentioned, and also for athletes and students with jobs.
Appreciate the responses.
Google Fluff and Fold laundry companies. I was thinking of signing up for one, and I know there were some delivery ones in the area. I know how to do laundry, but I’m a student parent who will also be working while in school, so the cost to pay someone to do my laundry is worth it.
Thanks. If you find one particularly recommended service, please feel free to post here or PM me. As @ProfessorPlum168 mentioned, this could be a great business idea for students (see same at Stanford in past few years) … surprised it does not already exist. Happy 4th all!
D doing an internship in PA this summer. Being housed at the University of West Chester. Most exciting thing about this living arrangement? FREE WASHERS/DRYERS. I could here the squeals of delight all the way across the country. During the school year, we bring her quarters if we’re feeling generous Let 'em do laundry - it’s a good skill to learn.
Googling “UC Berkeley laundry service” produced a number with good (4-5) Yelp ratings.
There was also this site: https://dormmom.com/
If kiddo doesn’t want to do his/her own laundry, it’s not that hard to walk to one of the nearby cleaners and save the pickup/delivery charges.
Or be creative: During law school (and for many years after, until I bought a house), I used to drive down to this mini mall in Albany to do my laundry. Studied while the clothes were in the washer. After I put them in the dryer, I’d walk over to the Round Table in the same little center and order a pizza. By the time I had my clothes back in the car, the pizza was done. Home for dinner and then ironing. Made a chore kind of a treat.
Dormmom.com doesn’t serve UC Berkeley unfortunately.
Really? Not what the web site says: https://dormmom.com/available/services/at/University-of-California-Berkeley/110635
