<p>ECC: I’m with Neon. I’ve never worked “biglaw” or for a major corporation, but have worked in government jobs most of my career-and there are very few jobs available in government. In addition, almost all govt jobs have had their pay frozen, depending on where you are in the country, between 2 and 4 years, and counting. I can’t comment on Iowa, but there is no growth-none-in small firms in most parts of the country; they aren’t hiring at all. Attending law school now-particularly a state school(as I did) is a big risk, unless you are at the absolute top of your class. This is the worst job market I’ve seen in my three decades practicing law.</p>
<p>I agree with all of you, I’m just describing the routes taken by several members of my extended family. And you are right, I don’t think any of the positions they’ve taken as family lawyers were advertised positions. The pay isn’t superb, but they are satisfied with it, and happy with their lives. But Mayberry isn’t for everyone.</p>
<p>As for our own son’s plans… Well, we’re trying to keep an open mind until he takes the LSAT in October. So is he.</p>
