Law school majors

I'm a frosh at UCSC with proposed Politics (currently enrolled in a lower-division politics course), and my plan after undergrad is essentially law school. And upon reading a lot of stuff on collegeconfidential and some other sites, I kind of grew to realizing that the Politics major here isn't that great, and I want one that would be more helpful to admissions for law.

Does the major (especially a major that is apparently considered a "joke" in this school) matter that much? I'm now considering choosing another major, and the other majors I had been considering were the history major and the legal studies major. Does anyone know how great the history major or the legal studies major are here? If they aren't great, are there any other majors I should consider?

Thanks!

I’m a 4th-year politics major at UCSC, and I haven’t heard it referred to as a “joke”. History is one thing, but why would anyone study legal studies – I mean, that’s what law school is for! Besides, philosophy/econ/poli sci majors usually end up pulling the highest LSAT scores, with legal studies/law undergrads consistently ranking at or near the bottom. In addition, you know that legal studies courses are mostly just cross-listed politics courses, right?

Look, law schools don’t care what you major in. All they want to see is a high GPA and a high LSAT score. Just study what you enjoy; you’ll do better that way. But, please, DON’T change your major just because one or two kids you met seem to think the politics major is “a joke”! I’d highly recommend adding a philosophy major or minor, though. It’ll get your mind working the way you’ll need it to work if you want to go to law school.
