So whats the deal w/ Lawrence Academy? Very expensive and down the road from Groton. Does anyone know about this school?

I took my SSAT’s there many, many moons ago and knew several kids who went there. Back then, at least, it was a decent private school, but not super-selective. And too pricey for my parents to consider for us. I remember it as a day school, but that could be because I lived close by?

Half day, half boarding.

Probably among the educationally progressive schools around…it is under endowed and so is not as high on people’s radars as it should be, but professional educational theorists are very very impressed with Lawrence. They are a very together place. Not to take anything away from Groton–really-- but Lawrence is the better of the two schools academically–btw–I have no dog in this fight–I am a professional educational theorist and have watched Lawrence with amazement for a few years now.

@etondad, Very interesting. Do you like the freshmen sci program? BTW, Eton was on my Dad`s list.

etondad: well, you made me look. Looks like Lawrence has an interesting philosophy toward education (though the description on the website is a too general for my tastes), but what makes you say that it’s better academically than Groton? Just curious…I’ve got no dog in this fight either. Groton has much better stats., so I’m assuming there’s something about Lawrence’s approach to education that has grabbed your attention.

Yes, I like the freshman program and the select program for some students to design their own curriculum and project closely supervised by faculty). It’s that they have THOUGHT very hard about what secondary school education should be, without the usual “well, we’ve ALWAYS done it this way.” It isn’t either Putney–all loose-goosey either. The students as a group aren’t as strong–but a great deal of that has to do with the reputation, endowment and the physical plant of the two schools. Let’s put it this way–I would love to be the headmaster at Lawrence, but not Groton. And, as I said, I have nothing against Groton is any way-- it is a top-notch school.
