Lawrence/Lane Towers

Any and all information about Lawrence Towers appreciated! It’s weird how there’s so much info about the wonderful environment being created for all the other dorms yet this one isn’t even listed on some of the maps! Ds got assigned there. Is there bus service? (One map shows the nearest bus route BLOCKS away!) Is it possible to ride a bike across that busy road between the dorm and campus? Is if dangerous to be outside late at night (ds liked working out at 1am last yr but he lived close to the gym on campus)? I can’t tell what’s around the dorm (other than a Panera’s) but I’ve read warnings that it’s skeevy at the periphery of campus, and thus dorm is “on the periphery”. What’s life in that dorm like, and who primarily lives there? (Assuming it’s a choice for some and not always an assignment) Thank you in advance!

My son’s friend lived there this past school year and loved it. It used to be called Lane Towers but was just renamed this year. It is a former hotel that was converted to a dorm. Thus, the rooms are larger than your average dorm room and each room has its own bathroom. Its on North campus, the safest part of campus. The Global business learning community is being housed there this year. Its really not too far from central campus, maybe a 10 minute walk. Its near the Blackwell hotel and Fisher school of business. Also Ohio Stadium is right across the street and Schottenstein arena is on same side of block a few blocks down over the river ramp. The warnings about “skeevy” periphery part of campus you mention is probably east and south of the barnes and noble bookstore and south of the south campus dorms, not the north campus (and west campus) which are the safest locales of campus.

My oldest lived there her sophomore year and loved it. She is now a senior living in a campus apartment. She also lived in Morrill Tower and the no longer there Scott House. Lawrence was her favorite of the 3.

My incoming freshman will be housed in Lawrence Tower. What I like about it, as does my senior, is that the rooms are bigger. It is an old hotel so picture the size of the room. The rooms are carpeted with a full size hotel bathroom (tub). 3 elevators, carpeted lobby. (just went back and read the previous reply, so sorry for the repeat…lol) We were able to configure the furniture in her dorm in such a way that it allowed for a “living room” area with bean bag chairs, a tv console stand for the tv and gaming consoles. Engineers primarily stayed there when my daughter was there. My incoming freshman is studying engineering. Her room mate is a biochem major. My oldest didn’t think it was skeevy. It is safer over there. It is close to Panera Bread and the Varsity Inn. Across the street from the ROTC and the Blackwell and within walking distance to the Shoe and RPAC. Jesse Owens stadium is behind the dorm as is the baseball field. The bus does go by there and there are bike paths on the roads. Fisher School of Business is nearby as well as the engineering buildings and architecture buildings. My daughter said they close the parking lot on football home game days and the police and fire dept set up shop right there in the parking lot.

As with anything, don’t travel late at night alone. It is best to travel in a group. But the north side of campus is safer than the south.

My daughter lived there last year, lives there this year, and is an OA there. She loves it. Here are pictures from her room this year. I was going to post an imgur album she made of the room but apparently we’re not allowed to do that. Sorry.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m relieved to read the positive reviews! Any furniture recommendations? He’s not a beanbag type (I would’ve loved that, though!). We’re thinking an extra desk (so, computer and study desks, in L shape, hopefully), and an end table (?) that’s either a small bookcase or something for shelving (I didn’t see any in the diagram but hard to tell). Maybe big tubs for storage under the sink? So much space there but the dh said they’re guys and you don’t put stuff on the floor near the toilet (eye roll)… I wish you could’ve posted the pics! He plans on bringing his bike-glad to know there are bike paths from up there.

Haha!! Ewwww at no stuff on floor near toilet! That made me LOL!! The beds are off the floor enough to put storage bins underneath. More flat ones, not the tall type. There are these HUGE wardrobes in there that are heavy as heck and near impossible to move over carpet but we did it and required major muscle power. My daughter and her room mate put their beds next together with a small table in between in order to open the space up. The back area of the room was their living room. A futon “might” fit in there. I can’t remember the space.

I don’t know if you can make an L shape out of the desk. It might chew up the floor space. For shelving, I bought one of those 4 bin shelf units. I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond. It has those fabric type bins in it that pull out like drawers and is like a tower.

I saw this thing somewhere, maybe Bed Bath and Beyond, that was a tower type shelf unit that went over the head of the bed. I think it was a metal frame one, not a wooden one, but it looked it gave extra storage for the student.
