My D is a senior and seriously considering Lawrence U. She is musically inclined (marching band), appreciates the arts (was a serious ballerina until HS) and is in varsity cross country. At this time, she plans to study psychology. As a potential Lawrentian coming from San Antonio, what can she expect in terms of peer support to help with the transition? Is it worth the cost and move vs an in-state school such as Texas A&M?
Typically, Lawrence and St Olaf are the two colleges used as examples for musically enclined students who don’t necessarily want to major in music but want to keep practicing at a high level.
To determine whether it’s “worth it”…
What’s your budget? Based on the NPC*, is Lawrence affordable?
Lawrence has a conservatory, meaning that music practice is two-tiered. However, compared to TAMU (for instance) there is a lot of support for musicians and non-STEM students. Music is part of the college’s culture and musicians are valued.
Compared to San Antonio it’ll be less diverse and much colder, but it’s usually quite sunny even when it’s cold, with students enjoying the outdoors.
(* just in case, NPC= net price calculator, available on every college website indicating how THEY would calculate YOUR specific costs. Each college has a different formula).
