Lawrenceville School vs. Peddie School !

I have been accepted into 5 out of 5 schools that I applied to. Hun, Peddie, George School, Solebury, and Lawrenceville. Money wise, I have eliminated Hun from my choices because they gave me no finanical aid what so ever.. /: anyway, Solebury was also eliminated because of distance. George School is an option but still no one of my top choices. I narrowd my choices down to Lawrenceville School and Peddie School. I have gotten a full scholarship grant for both of these schools! (: but the problem is that they are both very spectacular and I do not know which one to go to. For both of these schools, I have been accepted in as a 9th grade boarding student, for free. Please help me!! Which school do you think is better for a 14 year old girl. and please give reasons why.

Please & Thanks :)

I would recommend Lawrenceville, because people seem to like it better. I prefer Peddie, but it is up to you!

Congrats to you, Champioon! You are correct that they are both fantastic institutions with gorgeous campuses. You have an enviable choice. I would walk around both places some more and see what your gut tells you. Check out teams and activities, and see where you might fit in better. If you can chat some with girls at both schools, prepared in advance with good questions, that might be helpful as well (maybe try to decipher what the strengths and weaknesses are at each school). I have the impression that L. is more highly regarded academically, so if that matters to you you can give it more weight for that reason. Peddie is certainly right there with it, though, so my two cents is that you should try to figure out which institution will better nurture you personally for the future.

I would also search online for reviews from various web sites for each institution. You need to take a lot of that with a grain of salt, but it can provide some useful insights.

Here’s an earlier thread from CC:

Lawrenceville!

Congratulations and best of luck for the next 4 years. Lawrenceville is considered to be a much “better” school because it is academically much stronger than Peddie, thus will attract students that are brighter, more studious and ambitious. Actually if anyone that knows bs culture well looked at your list, without hearing your explanation for it, they would assume that your first choice was L-ville, with others as safeties. Really the two schools are usually lumped together because of their geographic location, and many people from the Mid Atlantic states do view them as 1choice/safety.

My biased view says Lawrenceville of course. Realistically, I would try and go to both revisit days and whatnot and really try to find which is the best fit for you.

This is interesting. Spideygirl nailed it…As we investigated both, we noted Peddie’s AP results are stronger than Lawrenceville’s. In fact, L’ville doesn’t offer AP courses, although kids do take the exams. Peddie was recently ranked among the top 15 with Lawrenceville…it’s smaller, more intimate, less preppy, and it is just as academic - but that’s more a recent development. Peddie didn’t always have the academic credentials that L’ville had…now it’s very similar. Kids appear to be really, really happy at both. My guess is that admit rate into both are fairly similar and there are great opportunities at both. You are deciding between two of the best schools in the country and all right here in Mercer County NJ! It all depends on what kind of experience you want. Kids at both schools go to the best colleges - so no worries there. They are just very different places. GOOD LUCK…revisit both for sure and see where you feel most comfortable. Go with that…!!

This depends on what type of school you want to attend. Lawrenceville is a tad more preppy, and sports are really important there. (This is just my opinion). At Peddie, there seems to be a balance between academics, music, and athletics. It is more casual. Both schools are highly regarded, have about the same admissions rate, exc. Good luck deciding, both schools are amazing institutions.

I’d say revisits are a must for you. FYI, many of the BS don’t have AP because they consider classes at junior or senior year to be AP level, and encourage students to take the APs.

If you care about “reputation”, I’d say that Lawrenceville has the upper hand here. It’s really the only mid-atlantic mentioned in the same breath as the New England schools.

Thanks all of you! (: I really appreciate all of the suggestions. It helped alot.

Wow, I never realized Peddie was a really good school… I always thought about it as my safety ^^;

I need to go back and review Peddie again…

Definitely Lawrenceville.
I have a friend who goes to Peddie and hates it there. Her older brother goes to Lawrenceville and she didn’t get in.

Having attended Peddie, along with a 5-week long summer program at Lawrenceville between my Junior and Senior years, and with many, many friends at L-ville, I believe that I am qualified to offer an opinion. I can certainly say that each school is equally rewarding in terms of academics. Students at both schools take several advanced and honors courses across all fields, and can even participate in research activities (in high school!). Moreover, both schools have great athletic teams. Peddie’s swim teams are among the top in the nation each and every year and the girls’ basketball team only recently lost the Prep State title (after holding it for 14 years in a row). Lawrenceville’s squash, boys’ lacrosse and track teams are also considered among the top in the nation. I was not much of a theater/arts person, but I guarantee that the Swig Arts Center at Peddie and Kirby Arts Center at Lawrenceville serve their theater/arts students more than adequately. In terms of college placement, you can check out both schools’ websites and take a look at the matriculation data (in the college counseling sections). There is no significant difference other than that Lawrenceville is a bigger school (about 200 per class) than Peddie (about 130 per class). Peddie tends to send several students to Penn (including many to Wharton, myself included) and Lawrenceville tends to send several students to Princeton. It is honestly a matter of fit, visit both campuses on their respective revisit days and you’ll have a much better idea. Either way, both schools are absolutely AMAZING. Good luck!

I have talked to people who attend Peddie and absolutely love it there. In fact Peddie’s swimming team is phenomenal, as is their basketball team. Their academics and arts department are both extremely strong as well. I found this link about the 2010 applicants that decided to attend Peddie. It really gives a clear image of how Peddie is becoming more and more prestigious with the applicants they accept each year.

Great, great link. Really shows Peddie’s recent rise to the top of the Prep/Private/Boarding Schools list.

Thank you Teamam for your wonderful response, I appreciate it greatly. And thanks all of you who responded. It is really helping me make my decision on which school to attend. And Writingandbooks, thanks for the link. (:

The Lawrenceville School - hands down. As others have mentioned, the reason L’ville is lumped in with other NJ boarding schools is purely geographic. (The only non-New England school in the Eight Schools is Lawrenceville). The Peddie School, of course, is a reputable institution with excellent educational opportunities. Even so, it is not on the same level as Lawrenceville. The Lawrenceville School offers a world-class education nearly unrivaled. That being said, if you have the choice, go for Big Red.

Also, someone correctly pointed out that L’ville does not offer AP courses. Lawrenceville dropped the AP label in favor of the “Honors” label. Classes certainly prepare students for AP exams. In fact, this change is very recent. Classes that used to be designated AP are now Honors classes - a nominal change only.

Oh, and, by the way, Lawrenceville was one of three high schools (the others being Andover and Exeter), that joined Harvard, Yale, and Princeton in INVENTING the AP program. Look it up.

I totally disagree that Lawrenceville is in another tier with their education. I think that Peddie’s recent rise shows that they, in fact, have so much to offer to their students.

First of all, the technology in Peddie is amazing. The fact that they have successfully integrated technology into their classes shows that they have quickly advanced. Lawrenceville doesn’t even require laptops. It doesn’t seem like technology is very big at L’ville, and I believe that technology will help students succeed in the classroom.

Your remark about education may be true, but in SOME places. True, Peddie does not offer Japanese or Greek, but they do offer levels that accommodate the students. Once Peddie actually created a class just so one student could continue their Latin studies.

The science lab is absolutely UNRIVALED, hands down. They have a DNA splicing lab! I don’t think Lawrenceville does. All of the BS seem to cater a taste of college down to their campus. This science lab proves to me that Peddie is well ahead of that idea.

And while it is true that Lawrenceville has fostered some sport icons, so has Peddie. They recently updated their athletics center, which is beautiful and also cost, I’m sure, lots of money. The varsity girls won the National High School Invitational title in basketball on ESPN. WOW!

I feel that the prestige of Lawrenceville wins over several people that were admitted to both schools. I think that Peddie is on the rise, and I disagree with the statement that Lawrenceville and Peddie are grouped together because of location. Peddie and Lawrenceville alike have released some level-headed, sophisticated students. Peddie was always a great school: now their story and philosophy is being spoken, and people are listening.

very well said, laughalittle!
