Lay it to me straight...

I wanna know which colleges and universities to apply to for a transfer.

ACADEMICS
* I have a 3.4-6 GPA in College (they aren't in officially, but that's a pretty close estimate).
* The college I go to, Gordon College, isn't that hot. I went there for reasons I'd rather not delve into right now.
* I wasn't ranked, the high school I went to was pretty elitist. I mean really, really high scores.
* I had a mediocre High School GPA, hanging around 3.3. My Senior and Junior years were decent (like, 3.6 to 3.8's randing).
* I had a 25 ACT with an 11 on the essay. If I retake it I'll probably get around 28-29.
* I've never taken the SAT but plan to.

CLUBS
* I'm on the Executive Student Administration here.
* I've got a music resume to die for, but I don't want to major in music.
* I'm in the Film Society at college.
* A few writing contests that I've won.
* Academic A-Team Senior year in High School. Like, a quiz bowl thing.
* Community service in the Dominican Republic.
* I've been on NPR for music.
* I've been to Aberdeen International Youth Festival for music.
* I've taken a summer abroad in Spain, 2005.
* Work for the College paper.
* Cover work for High School's literary journal.

I'm looking at Communication Arts as a major. Please help me out by telling me straight what I've got a shot at and what I should try for on an off-chance.

Clarification on,

"I wasn't ranked, the high school I went to was pretty elitist. I mean really, really high scores."

The High School's students had really, really high scores.

The writing contests I won were -not- major. I was noted in a nation-wide competition for my writing once, but didn't win anything.

I think it would help if you tell us a little more about what you are looking for in a school, in addition to the major.

Large/med/small? Urban/rural/suburban? Geographic location? Sports-oriented or not? Greek-oriented or not? Etc, etc.

Well, I'll take any college based on its size, location, demographic. Something down south is preferrable, where the winters I grew up with are absent, but I can deal with a winter if the college is good enough to be worth it.

Basically, a list of colleges with a reach, a few maybes and a safety or two.

And yes, I did search sort of thing already, but I want to personalize my chances. Sorry.

Oh, and here's what I got on AP's:

US Hist.: 4
Lit.: 4
Language: 3

Well, Syrus, I'd like to help but there are over 2000 four-year colleges and universities; of those, over 1000 have various Communications majors; if we limit it to South and Southwest, that still leaves over 300.

I don't see how strangers can sensibly recommend schools for you if you don't share more of what you are seeking. If you'll "take any college based on size, location, demographic," then just throw darts ;). Somehow, I'm guessing you really are a bit more particular than that.

Should I just name schools?

Okay, would I even have a shot at UCLA, Wake Forest, UNC, Vanderbilt? Or those even beyond 'Reach' status?

lol is gordon like BJ.U.??

Based on stats alone, Vanderbilt and UCLA would be reaches (and, yes, perhaps "beyond" reach) for you. So it depends on whether there is something else you bring to the table, as well as your essays and recs. If you are not a California resident, UCLA will be very, very difficult. If you are a California resident, you should put some of the UC's or CSU's which are more matched to your stats on your list.

I don't know enough about Wake or UNC to comment.

What schools have you identified that are more a match or safety for your stats?

You have a decent chance at Wake Forest...and, if you are in-state, Chapel Hill is possible.

For English/Communication:

How about Sewanee, Rhodes, Hendrix, Centre, Elon University, Oxford College of Emory U, Furman U, URichmond...

Tulane, UGeorgia, UMissouri-Columbia, etc...

If we knew more spacifics besides major and geography, we could better assist you.

"lol is gordon like BJ.U.??"

Nah, think of it as a liberal Wheaton College.

I was forced to go there because I said screw Protestentism, so they said I had to go to a Christian college for at least a portion of my undergrad. years or good luck paying for college. Ugh.

Okay, how about this list:

Wake Forest
William & Mary
Tulane
Rhodes
UI Urbana-Champaign (I'm from Illinois)

Is that a decent list? Rate my chances.

Thanks for putting up with me while I've been vague. To be more specific, something on the cheaper end (35k or less) and, frankly, beautiful. If it isn't a beautiful campus I don't want to consider it.

I think you have pretty good chances at Tulane, which is the only one I know personally. The campus is very nice, the city is wonderful. I'm not sure if you have a safety on the list unless UIUC is safe because you are in-state.

Tulane is not under $35 K unless you get financial aid. Don't know if any of the others are either. You can find that out at their websites or collegeboard.com.

Tulane and Rhodes seem like "match" chances to me. Why don't you try to add a safety school, unless your safety would be to stay where you are.

Well, a safety would be where I am. Though I'm from the state as UIUC. Any other thoughts?
