How is it?
I couldn't find info on the w+m site (I could've just missed it), and the only post I saw really addressing it was one from a year or two ago, saying that it was being remodeled. How is it now? If it sucks, is that an issue? Is there a good one nearby, or do people just run around a lot?
Thanks guys!:-)

I go to the Rec Center three times a week, and I love it. As a Sophomore, I wasn't there before it was remodeled, so I can't comment on how bad it was before. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's a little small, but on the whole it's a great facility.

the new rec center is excellent.

... people also run around a lot, mostly Jamestown Road and down through Colonial Williamsburg.

How great? Can someone please describe it a bit? Is it comparable to U. Richmond, Tulsa, Bucknell, Penn State, Berry, and a few others? Some of these are really amazing, incredible facilities and equipment. Almost enough to motivate one to the treadmill.

the new rec center is really nice. here are pics: Recreational Sports | Rec Sports

click the first picture to see what the old rec looked like, and click the title of the pictures to see what the new rec looks like.

i'm not sure how it compares to other schools rec centers because i've never seen other schools rec centers, but ours is a really nice place to workout, or play basketball, racquetball, squash, go swimming, rock climbing, etc.

Then you also have the trails through Matoaka Woods almost right behind the center. That's really nice if you like to run.

alright 3 questions...

Do you have do pay anything to use the rec?

Is it ever crowded enough that you cant get a machine?

Is the outdoor track open to students if they want to use it to run?

S does not pay to use the W&M rec center. When his father played racquetball with him during Parents' Weekend, father paid a $5/day fee.

I doubt there are very many (any?) people here who have seen rec centers at other schools.

1. Do you have do pay anything to use the rec?
use of the rec center is free to students (aka included in tuition)

2. Is it ever crowded enough that you cant get a machine?
not in my experience... i'm not sure when peak rec center hours are though.

3. Is the outdoor track open to students if they want to use it to run?

The football stadium, where the track is located, is usually locked (sometimes open though). You can get pretty accurate distance measurements on mapmyrun.com if that is a significant concern.

Don't you think many w&m students have also seen the Richmond taj mahal? It's something else. But from the looks of things, the Tribe has done a spectacular job taking an already existing facilty and making it into something quite special. Congrats to the College.

Richmond may have a fancy Rec Center but the food leaves a lot to be desired!! Both my kids spent a summer at UofR for Governor's School and both had identical comments about the food!

"Don't you think many w&m students have also seen the Richmond taj mahal?"

i don't have any idea what you're talking about. i think the only W&M students that would know what you're talking about are the ones who have lived in richmond.

I actually thought the food was great at UR when I was there!(early 80's) but I believe it is the tuition that leaves a lot to be desired .......I would personally rather see the tuition go down than a fancy Rec Center go up.

Me too, but I think they got the equation sorta goofed up. "Raise $$ to build a beautiful rec/wellness center ... then raise tuition, too." Oh well, what's one to do.

honestly? no. I have a few friends at UR, and I've been there a few times. The rec center was not on my list of people or places to see.

Yeah, basing your decision on which college to attend based on the rec center...hmm

hmm ... how'd you conclude that? Did you ever hear the about he who "assumes?" Ask your junior hi football coach. ;)

Ok, you got me on that one, I concede your point.

I guess it is only one factor of many to consider.

Yea, it seems to be the latest, greatest showpiece on many college tours, altho you're on the $$. Fair to suggest that none should pick a school based on what's served at the gym juice bar. Nice but tangential to the central mission. And definitely nice knowing that W*M has enhanced the Tribe Healthclub.

In my day, we had a Universal Machine in a 20' x 15' room in the basement of Blow Gym.

That was the student athletic center in 1980! lol
