This doesn’t really have to do with grades or anything really related, but I though it may be an interesting topic.
My teacher once told me that some people are born leaders, and some are born followers; and it is better to find out which one you are early so you know which one you are throughout your life.
I completely disagreed with this. I think that people can develop themselves in a way that would make them into a leader; and those who are followers are not leaders because fear, amongst other things, is holding them back. However, i do believe a “follower” can turn into a leader.
I guess the real question is, are leaders made or born? How are leaders made? I think this thread may help a few people, including me, figure out where they stand or how they can push themselves or make themselves into leaders.
If you don’t like this thread, or think it is useless that’s fine, but I’d rather you not comment anything along those lines.
I think leaders are made, but up to a certain point. I don’t think you can become a leader when you’re 50. I’m too lazy to get into a full discussion right now about this topic, but just wanted to present my insight.
HAHA! Thanks for my morning laugh @ripped! I believe anyone can turn into a leader if they become passionate about it. I truly believe that is what college is for at your age. A new start. Your starting with a fresh notebook. Fill it up with whatever you want when you go to college. The possibilites are endless. It is up to you to take that leap, or just follow… Do what makes you happy. Good luck!
I’m the president of two clubs at my school, and I am in no way a natural-born leader. My experiences, initiatives, and motivation have allowed me to develop into as much of a leader as I am today.
On the Leader vs. Follower debate, I feel as if we are all followers with the potential to be leaders. At the same time, even as a leader, one must realize that they are also a follower. When it comes to Beta Club or SECME at my school, I am the one who leads meetings, communicates with members, and becomes the go-to person for concerns. However in many respects, I have to be able to realize that I am not the one with authority.
It sounds like your teacher shouldn’t be teaching. Leading is all about confidence. If you think that you know what you’re doing and are able to communicate it to others, you can become a leader fairly easily. Sadly, you don’t actually need to know what you’re doing…
Maybe a little off topic, but I think that there is too much of a negative emphasis on follower. For many clubs, everyone’s too fixed on being a leader that nothing actually gets done. A follower is just as important as a leader. You need both to succeed. Also, I think everyone is a leader naturally at a different thing, you just gotta find it.
Leaders are definitely made. Some have a naturally aptitude, but I’ve seen many fall flat of their potential due to improper execution, or lack of ambition, etc. A leader sets an example, and they have an overall goal for people to work towards. they also have to have some semblance of authority and respect garnered from those around them.
Then there are the people who should stop and sit down. But there would be no leaders without followers, so it’s fine to be either.
