hi guys! :)
so I was just wondering- how important is leadership for colleges? Like, is it super hard to get into a good college(Stanford, MIT, etc) without any leadership?
And also, does starting a club and running it count as leadership?

Thanks so much!! :D

It’s nearly impossible to get into Stanford and MIT no matter what you do. In all likelihood you’ll be rejected.

Many, many colleges are “good”. Even ones that aren’t selective and don’t give a damn about leadership as long as your grades are good.

Starting a club counts as leadership. Leadership will help you get into colleges that care about leadership, and ridiculously selective colleges like Stanford and MIT usually do. BUT just starting a club isn’t particularly impressive to those colleges…a lot of people do that.

If you want to get into a top college, focus first on getting great grades in the hardest courses your school offers. That is more important than anything else. The best candidates are able to simultaneously do that and also excel outside the classroom. One way to excel outside the classroom is by standing out as a leader in some way (including by starting and running a club), but that is not the only path to admission at top schools. You might, for example, be a nationally ranked debater or athlete, or a winner in a top science or math competition.

Oh ok thanks!! That really helped! :D

it is possible to not be a leader but usually if you’re passionate about anything you are going to strive to get to the top. for example, i really love fighting for gay rights so i did a bunch of gay activism stuff in high school and started a GSA at my high school. the most important thing is your passion then comes everything else. also being involved in a lot of similar activities that demonstrate your passion for it helps too.

woah thats awesome that you do that! I support you 100%
Thank you! :D

your welcome.
thanks for your support. i appreciate it.
