Going from president to vp?

Hi everyone,
So I was president of a certain club this year (my junior year) but a few days ago, due to the fact that my opponent brought in his friends to vote for him, I lost and became vp. Will this have any effect on my college apps? Will it be seen as a downgrade and not looked upon favorably by college admission officers?

On a side note, I’m feeling sort of bitter about this and I don’t know how to cope or if my feelings are even legitimate. The person I ran against had his friends support h whereas I don’t have many friends in the club considering I’m the only girl and they’ve already formed their clique. I had so many ideas for next year, but the thing is, the future president will get credit for those things when it was actually me and I don’t want that to happen. Idk I’m just sort of mad that he used the excuse that he wanted a turn as president and pretty much bribed people (by saying he would pay for brand new t shirts). How do I cope? I feel like I’m being too overdramatic but I’m really sad.

I don’t think that there is a problem here. Leadership is not about being in positions of official power. Leadership is about helping others to be successful.

I understand why you are not happy about this. However, I don’t think that it will have any significant affect on your college applications.

DadTwoGirls, thanks for the response. After some thought I’ve decided to implement the ideas that I have regardless of my officer position. However, I’m still concerned about the president taking credit - is that a big deal? I’ve always been touchy about others taking credit for my work. Anyways, it doesn’t matter as long as I can make this club better because I truly do love it and want it to grow. It’s good knowing it won’t impact my college apps (although I think this issue for me has leaned more towards the social aspect and less the college app one).

unless you were POTUS going from president to VP won’t matter much…and will not even be noticed by admissions

What you implement, you implement. Let your GC and math teacher casually know your ideas and progress.

Nothing says only a hs club president gets credit. What you legit do, you can accept credit for, on your apps. It’s an important lesson for females. You are not diminished and don’t give away credit for what you do for the club. (There are times later, when a boss takes credit for the team. This kid isn’t a boss.)

As for the title, sure, an adcom can see. But lots of kids trade off, per a school policy or etc. Titles aren’t everything. Your work and impact are.

You can take credit for your ideas in your applications no matter what your title is. You cannot control what the other person does or doesn’t do.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I appreciate all your advice! I’ve come to terms with this and will definitely try my best to grow this club as much as I can! Thanks again

Let’s say I am now VP of the Hogwart’s Gobstones Club. Last year we held a Gobstones tournament for the first time.
THis year I want to have a competition between schools, but now Draco is President. I could still propose it at a meeting. The meeting minutes would show this. If the Professor Flitwick, the adviser is there, he would know I did this.
Draco may say that this is a good idea and have a vote. Let’s say everyone votes yes. I can volunteer to contact my people I know over at Beauxbaton and Durmstrang. Draco is happy to let me do work. I also volunteer to be the head of the subcommittee on this tournament. Draco is happy because this will get done and it may seem he will get credit.

But when I am applying to college I can say Gobstones CLub, President, Grade11, Vice President, Grade 12. Successfully organized the first intramural Gobstones Competition and inter-school Gobstones Competitions among three High Schools including 50 students.

Who cares if Draco claims credit too? You organized the tournaments so you can claim that on your application.

This is a minor detail. The situation hurts and is not fun. Lots of times people give up the top position to teach and train a person for the next years ahead. No one will notice. All that matters is you gave to the group, provided leadership and made a difference no matter the title. Then just write about those successes. Good luck
