How important are leadership roles in the admissions process? I am the treasurer of one club at my school but I do not have any other positions. Is that enough for the top schools if the rest of my application is great or should I work to get elected to more positions?

If you are applying to the most competitive colleges in the country -- places like HPYS or if you want merit aid, having top leadership positions --even at the regional or national level -- are important. Otherwise, it's not that important. Grades, scores and having the required curriculum are what get most students into college. That's not enough at the most competitive colleges because the majority of their applicants have the grades, scores and curriculum that's needed for admission. There are far more excellent applicants than spaces, so ECs including ones with demonstrated leadership (i.e. ones in which one really did a project or had an impact) are important.

Yeah, if you want to go to the most competitive schools, then you have to at least some leadership positions in order to even have a chance at the top schools. I guarentee the majority of those applicants will have leadership roles. Some leadership roles are easier top get than others. It just depends how involved you are. Try to be more active and see if you gain a spot in any more leadership positions. One idea is to be the founder of founder (and president) of your own club. Colleges like to see some entrepreneur spirit in students. That's what I plan to do this upcoming school year.
