Being a junior on this forum allows me the opportunity to observe qualities colleges look for and I'm able build upon this quality before I apply, and one quality I've noticed is leadership. What constitutes leadership? An actual leadership role? Sorry if this is a repetitive thread. Thank you in advance for your advice! :)

Basically yes (with a few exceptions)… Officer and board positions are the most common, everything from president of a club to editor of the school newspaper to a board member who is in charge of programing. There are exceptions like leadership programs that you have to apply for, they generally are programs that look for future leaders and help prepare them to be leaders.

Um, here are my leadership things (my resume is leadership heavy) if you want a real life example (sorry if you don’t, thought this might help)…

Freshman Year
- Youth group chapter newsletter editor
- Philanthropy program (you have to be selected, one of those exceptions)
- Advisory board for local library (I plan programs and other things that make it leadership)

Sophomore year
- Regional youth group newsletter editor
- Youth group chapter yearbook editor
- Board member for an advisory board for a place where I volunteer
- Diller teen fellow (again one of those exceptions)
- Philanthropy program
- NAHS membership chair
- Advisory board for local library

Junior year
- Ad/copy editor for school yearbook
- Youth group chapter yearbook editor
- Board member for an advisory board for a place where I volunteer
- One of the yearbook editors for a place where I volunteer
- Philanthropy program
- NAHS membership chair
- Math club membership chair
- Advisory board for local library

^Yep that constitutes leadership

And I thought I had a decent amount of leadership positions.

Would you consider Freshman Mentors leadership? It’s a program where we guide freshman, help them, plan and do activities with them. Or is that more volunteering?

Because you are doing planning (and I am assuming leading others while you do so) it could be leadership. There is a fine line between leadership and community service, in terms of resume classify it as which ever you currently have less in. That being said because it that is on the border between the two if you have stronger leadership put it as community service.

^^that’s definitely leadership. the main reason colleges like leadership (and this doesn’t mean you have to have leadership by the way) is to show that you have guided and/or influenced people or the community

Leadership is simply the act of leading

great tips and impressive stats, ArtsyGirl13!

just wondering, but how does one get involved in leadership freshman year (when it’s almost 2nd quarter…) ??
