Some of the Florida law schools that didn’t concentrate exclusively on working toward passing bar exam, but rather educating their law students to “think like lawyers” I’m sure will step back, look at these results, and realize to legally think and practice like a lawyer one has to pass the bar exam first. For sure the Florida law schools with the lower passing rates will analyze what occurred thoroughly. Interestingly, the non-Florida law school graduates did fairly well compared to those attending Florida law students.

^ I know nothing about law so maybe this is normal, but why does the chart show Harvard and UVa having people take the New York bar exam? Does this mean the plurality of graduates are getting hired in NY?

FSU’s past performance on the bar? You mean when they were consistently ranked #1 in the state? One below average class shouldn’t be cause for worry.

“Exhibit A: They ranked No. 1 among the state’s law schools in February 2008 for the percentage passing the bar. They also ranked No. 1 in July 2007 and July 2006.”

And let’s not forget another quote from the article:

“Law school graduates at University of Florida and Miami, traditionally FSU’s primary competitors for the top ranking, fared even worse than FSU. Florida had 64.9 percent passing; Miami had 61.1.”

So in reality, the news are not so “baffling”. If anything, FSU should be ranked even higher.

Really, there’s no reason why FSU Law isn’t the top law school in the state. It has everything you’d need to be an attorney in Florida - especially connections. The fact that UF has ever been rated higher is a little amazing.

If I were dean of any of the law schools that only had a 61 or 65% passing rate for the bar exam in Tampa Feb. '09 (FSU, UF, U Miami), one of the first things I would check is finding out if any of the students were goofing off in Tampa partying the nights of exams and showing up for exams hungover or tired. It’s the only explanation I can think of. These low passing rates are terrible. Just 3 or 4 screwoffs could throw passing percentage off 10% for class. This might sound like a stupid explanation for the poor showings, but something went wrong, and Tampa sure has plenty of distractions for visitors to town. The local Tampa Bay law school, Stetson, had an 80% passing rate, the highest percentage of any Fl law school–they’ve already hit all of Tampa’s night spots before! Anyway, that’s my theory for tonight. It may seem unlikely that the test takers would do anything this stupid, but dumber things have been done. The law schools I am sure will review the whole deal thoroughly to improve things for future test takers and making sure the law schools are doing what they need to be doing.
