For one of the schools I’m applying to, many of the essay prompts have lent themselves very well to a discussion about my LGBT identity and my engagement in the LGBT community, but this application is very focused on that aspect of my identity because of this. Should I try to make it more well-rounded, or will this focus look good?
An essay about LGBT identity could be effective if you have an essay’s worth of things to say about how the community affected you and how you affected it in turn. I think – and keep in mind I haven’t written an essay yet and haven’t taken any classes for it, so take my advice with a grain of salt – if you can make the essay about your advocacy and involvement in the community, how the community shaped you and your actions and growth, that could make a good essay. It you mainly just talk about that aspect of your identity, it doesn’t really tell readers who you are (and probably doesn’t set you apart from the other LGBT kids saying the same thing). Basically, if the essay is about who you are and what you’ve done with it rather than /what/ you are, I think it’ll look better.
Either way, good luck!!
