If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! Especially about the VPA CRS program, which I now have a better feeling about. :)

Did you hear anything about film program? I’m wondering how’s the learning and social atmosphere there…
Is it easy to do transfer from VPA to Newhouse?? Thank you so much! I wish I could have the chance to visit campus too:(

Weluvnik: could you post or PM highlights about VPA CRS?

I have a bunch of prospies that I am proposing that program to…

Hi Rodney, here is a summary. Please let me know if you have any specific questions.

The most important thing we learned about CRS was the program requirements. I am impressed with how flexible the program is. They encourage most students to have a dual major or a minor, and make it very easy to accomplish this. The normal requirements are 36 credits in CRS courses, 54 in A&S, and 30 in general electives. But if you have a minor or dual major, or you study abroad, you can cut the A&S requirement way down: [Course Catalog - Syracuse University](http://coursecatalog.syr.edu/2011/programs/communication_and_rhetorical_studies)

We also learned a lot about the career potential for CRS grads. The possible careers a CRS major may pursue include: PR/Marketing, Advertising, Event Planning, Corporate Communications, Corporate Education, Development, Political Consultant, Speech Writer, Law School, and Media (TV/Radio) production. Suggested dual majors/minors include: Management (SOM), Marketing (SOM), PR (Newhouse), IT (IST), Political Science, and many more.

They had 4 students there to talk to us, and all were very excited about their job prospects and all had done internships (most in NYC… PR, advertising, and law are the ones I recall). The program actually sounds very interesting. It teaches students how to speak and communicate effectively and pursuasively… a great skill for most jobs, especially advertising/PR and law. The director didn’t have stats on in-field job placement, which would have been nice.

I didn’t ask about CRS compared to Newhouse… didn’t want to offend anyone by implying that it was our first choice. But I got the impression that it was the first choice for many of the people there. But I walked away confident that even if my D doesn’t transfer to Newhouse as a sophomore, I think she will have a good degree. If she stays in CRS, she will minor in IT/web design. I think the combination of technical and communication skills will serve her well.

One mom in attendance actually has a degree in Speech & Communication form the U of Georgia (I think that’s what it was). I wish I could recall what she does for a living, I only recall it had something to do with medicine… QA, perhaps?? Anyhow, she was very encouraging to all the students, stating that this type of degree will be very useful.

Please let me know if I can answer any specific questions. If someone knows how I can post a document, I would be happy to post the course requirement sheet – it explains specifically which courses are required.
