In comparison to Newhouse....

Could the College of Visual and Peforming Arts even hold a candle? Does anyone know anything about the programs they offer? Thanks!

from wat i know, Newhouse is all media based and VPA is more artsy. My sister attended VPA and majored in Film as in movie making/ producting/ directing that type of deal where as I applied to Newhouse and plan to major in Advertising or PR but i know that the film area of Newhouse is based around media..i guess it depends on what you want to study. If you want to do something in communications Newhouse is the school you want to go to...

don't know how much that helped but my whole fam went to Syracuse so thats from a personal perspective I guess

VPA rocks!! quite different from Newhouse though

It may surprise you to learn that VPA is one of the best, most recognized schools in the country for what they do. If you are interested in applied art or design, it is a very top-notch program. If you check the art faculty found at top art and design schools, you will be surprised at home many attended VPA.

However, as noted above, VPA is more artsy than Newhouse.

I assumed as much, just looking at the information on websites and stuff...i'm just torn between the two...newhouse seems so difficult to get into..and journalism/marketing are things i'm interested in and have experience in...but i love film, it's pretty much my life...sooo i've been having a hard time deciding on which one..i know i will apply to SU regardless, i really want to just go there, it seems like an amazing school. But anywho, thanks everyone so much for your comments! Maybe i'll look into VPA a little more...from what you guys have said it seems really good

Also!..if anyone has any idea whatsoever, what are the stats of those accepted into VPA? thanks!

Hey - I am kind of torn between journalism and film myself. I think Newhosue is the hardest to get into, so I applied for that b/c I knew from there it would be easy to transfer into VPA. For my second choice I put VPA.

Basically, I know Syracuse has a class that is like "Intro to Communications" that talks about all of the different jobs you can get by being in Newhouse, and all of the different types of things you can do, etc. I think you don't need to decide where you want to go in life your first year. Take a variety of classes (I am sure you can take some VPA/film classes without being in the school) and from there decide which ones you like best. Maintain a high GPA and if you are in Newhouse, you can transfer to VPA, and if you are in VPA, you can transfer into Newhouse.

Also, if you haven't yet, be sure to visit. Each school has an open house where they talk about what programs they offer and stuff. If you want to know more about VPA, I suggest going to their open house. I know it was my visit to Syracuse that really made me decide to apply there.

I applied to Newhouse and I know that it isnt that easy to transfer into Newhouse from a different Syracuse school...you have to have a very strong GPA in VPA and Arts and Sciences whatever it may be. They take like the first 100 or so people that have the highest GPAs and just go down the list until they decide to stop, there is no guarantee that you will automatically get in..and as far as stats goes...my sister graduated from VPA in 2003 and she didnt have anything that amazing when she applied she had in the 1100's on the old SAT but i dont remember her GPA definitly over a 3 tho...she also had double legacy tho...

VPA is very portfolio oriented too. You will need a strong portfolio to get admitted there along with a very decent academic record. Although the average GPA and SATs at VPA aren't as high as that of Newhouse, they still want a decent academic background.

Thanks everyone :) Just in terms of film...i feel like by the time I apply to Syracuse, I won't even love to do it anymore (I have a HORRIBLE teacher, it's "IB" film, but the class is a joke)...and i've checked community colleges in my area and the courses they offer are limited and not open to anyone under 18, so it's quite frustrating. And the other thing that bothers me is what follows college...granted I go to VPA or Newhouse...there just seems to be sooo many more opportunites for those who go to Newhouse because communications is such a large and popular field.

In the things you are interested in, like PR and advertising, there are more opportunities probably.

But I know journalism is really cutthroat. It's a tough profession to make it in, and most are barely scraping by on meager salaries from super local papers.

In part the difficulty of getting a decent salary with a communications degree is because it is so popular...supply exceeds demand.

I don't think you will jobless if you graduate from VPA. A strong background in film and/or other fine arts will prepare you for being part of a marketing/advertising team as well. You could also minor in marketing or business to expand your job opps. I think many firms are looking for dedicated and artistic people, if you don't make it as a screenwriter or filming movies.

Yes, but wouldn't you argue that the film industry is just as competitive? Film is definitely something I am more passionate about, journalism was something I kind of did because I was recommended my freshman year by my English teacher...without that letter of recommendation I would have never chosen to take Photojournalism (yearbook), but film is completely different. After giving it a lot of thought..I think I've decided on applying to VPA, let's hope I get in!

Make sure you do as much research into this as possible before you arrive, because it's notoriously hard to take VPA classes if you're in Newhouse and vise versa. Very secluded like. I personally am interested in Advertising and Industrial Design/Interior Design/Communications Design, but I haven't had a chance to explore the latter at all in VPA and if I transfered to VPA now, after a year in Newhouse, I'd have to take an extra year in college because the VPA curriculum is so vigorous.

well i'm sure that i wouldn't transfer, if i apply and get into one, i won't go or take classes at the other..it just seems like such a messy and unnecessary process..
