Learning the Keyboard

So I have a summer's worth of time and I want to be productive. I've always thought piano tunes are lovely, but I haven't seriously pursued music in any modem. I dabbled with the trumpet and violin as a child, but nothing really stuck. I have a job now, and some extra cash so I wanted to take up a new hobby.

Thing is, I'd be learning straight from youtube videos. For seasoned players, how long did it take you to familiarize yourself with the keys and such?

This has been on my mind for a while.

wow no one here plays?

BUMP!

It takes a little while to get adjusted to the left and right hand rhythms. Some good teachers on YouTube for learning songs are gotitans999 and pianojohn113.

It took a while to play chords. I was only 8 then though…

Ya, most people here will have started when they were younger which is a lot different from picking it up as a teenager/adult.

Do you know how to read music currently? If so, start with that basic. Pick up a couple beginner books, because there is a certain way to hold your hands and whatnot, that you could miss out just messing around (but then again, those aren’t too important if you’re just trying to gain a basic knowledge). Youtube will help. I stopped playing a few years ago. I realized I didn’t like it, but love brass instruments…go figure.

I mean I learned how to play notes for a violin when I was a kid but no, I’m basically starting with a clean slate.

My dad got me this casio beginner’s keyboard with a book, but I’m more of a visual learner, so I’ll try to get that down with youtube.

I mean I’d like to get the basic down this summer, but I have the rest of my life to get really good haha

Learn keytar. It’s way cooler.

^ I concur, keytar is f***ing awesome.

i learned how to type from typing in cheats from the game Age of Mythology rofl.

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz i can type around 100wpm consistently

^^I think he’s talking about piano keyboard.

You can always get a keyboard and a book to start off. I did this; I’ve been playing for about three months and I’ve already started to dabble with Beethoven and Bach.
