Well, I have a ''friend''. Who wants to learn the piano, lol.
Lets get to the point, is it ''too late'' to learn an instrument during ones' sophmore, junior year?
Also is the piano truly a rewarding instrument?

YES!!! I've been playing since 8th grade and it's NEVER too late.

I love piano. It's the most relaxing instrument to me. :].

You'll like it, trust me.

If you're looking for scholarships or something, yes it's probably too late. But just to learn it, it's amazing.

Screw piano, try (or have your friend try) viola! Although, as noted author E. M. Forster writes in A Passage to India:

"A viola was almost a demerit, and certainly not the sort of instrument one mentioned in public."

And it's never too late to learn an instrument, although the learning curve may be a bit harder.

Yuck, I hate stringed instruments. We don't get along...

It's NEVER too late to learn an instrumant.

Especially if you can already read music. I'm trying to learn guitar and I'm a senior. ^_^

However, if this is one of those things where you're doing it just for college, walk away RIGHT NOW. Instruments (any, whether it's voice or an actual instrument) require far too much time and effort and dedication to do "just to get in to college".

OMG! Proletariat2!! I play the viola, and it is awesome! :)

I bought a guitar in September of this year. I had no idea how to play, but now I can play Good Riddance by Green Day, Hey there Delilah, and a few others. It's never too late to learn an instrument. I'm 17--senior btw.

"Yuck, I hate stringed instruments. We don't get along..."

Well, technically, the piano is a stringed instrument :p.

To answer your question SDMS12, it is never too late to learn how to play an instrument. If you want to learn how to play the piano, then go for it.

Yea, I totally agree with everyone over here. If you really want to play the piano, you're going to need patience and perseverance. Playing the piano can be very frustrating at times, but practice makes perfect! ;)

We need to start some kind of society for viola playing CCers! Though the people on the music majors' forum probably already have some de facto body for that.

I started Piano in 5th grade, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I also started violin in freshman year. Let me just say, the violin is much harder than the violin because the movements involved in playing a stringed instrument are very unnatural, so it is hard to get use to. Any way, I would say that it is never to late to start playing an instrument.

A ton of my friends learned how to play the guitar after starting hs, ranging from 14-18.

Alex Turner and Jamie Cook from the Arctic Monkeys never played guitar before they were 17.
Now they're part of one of the most popular/awesome bands in the UK.
And they play the song that is currently stuck in my head (Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts<3)

We definitely should! :)

Who would tell you no? You already know everyone's going to be all encouraging and like "follow your passions!"

I wish I could play an insturment.

trust me its never too late.
and high school is pretty darn early. your brain is developing until your early 20s, so basically anything you start doing before then you can pick up relatively easily.
so i would encourage you to do it!!
