learning to drive

I'm from the city, so I've never really had to drive. I'm a freshman at cornell now and I'm starting to think that it may be useful to drive around the cornell area in the future (though never having to be a designated driver would be nice). I have my permit and took drivers ed 2 years ago, but I havent driven since and I don't really think I can drive or park safely. Has anyone learned to drive in Ithaca? Any recommendations on driving schools?

do you have access to a car?

anyway maybe you can get one of your friends to teach you/take you driving, although a quick google search told me they would have to be 21 so it would need to be an upper classmen. Its not that hard, its mostly experience so any decent driver would probably be fine, especially if you go in areas without much traffic at first. That would be much cheaper than a driving school.

My friend used this service for driving lessons: Home

It's convenient because you get your driving lesson with qualified instructors and I think they provide a car for the road test. They also offer the NYS 5 hour pre-licensing course needed by students who didn't take driver's ed in high school.

Ithaca is a challenging place to practice driving because of all the hills. I had the dubious pleasure of teaching Happydad to drive a stick-shift vehicle while we were in grad school there. Still gives me occasional nightmares 20 years later....

I'd suggest that you make sure that your friends have nerves of steel, and stick to the flat parts of town until your friends have confidence in your ability to manage their cars safely.

Good luck!
