My son just found out that he has been accepted and will be inducted. What is the likelyhood that he could get leave for the weekend of August 23 to attend his sister's wedding? Who do we contact? We are excited about his appointment, just clueless as it appears that plebes don't get a lot of benefits. Thanks for any insight.

I would advise that you contact the company officer once you get your son's company assignment and contact information.

Normally it is the responsibility of the MIDN to route a special request chit, but over plebe summer there really will not be time and/or the resources/knowledge of how to go about the request.

Since the wedding is in the immediate family, there is a better chance of the request being approved.
Normally, weekend liberty would be granted to accomodate the request.

I think August 23rd is during the academic year and after Reform. He may be able to get a chit for the wedding if, as you suggest, he talks to the company CO and goes through the chain of command. Anything is possible, you just have to ask. I have seen stranger things happen.

Given that the fall term starts on Wed. August 20th, and Plebe summer does not end until reform earlier in the week, that time frame does not lend itself to waiting to put in a chit. If airfare needs to be purchased it could be a real problem. Jadler's suggestion is probably valid in this case.

Thanks for the information everyone. We will see how it works out.

AF6872,

If airfare is needed, waiting until reform is impractical, unless you want to pay a significant price. The time difference between the function and reform is less than a week because the plebe won't know who is in their AcYear chain-of-command.

Also, when you know about something in advanced, it is better to discuss it a few weeks prior. It is courtesy not to "throw" a chit at the chain-of-command at the last minute. Your chit may get approved, but it ticks people off. I wouldn't recommend a plebe putting up a chit during plebe summer (the exception to this is emergency leave/liberty).

Also, do not buy the ticket until the company officer approves the chit. This is another courtesy because doing this puts the CO in an unwelcomed corner.

Jadler03:

As usual, you are correct. I didn't know that Reform was so close to the date requested. I assume that any request for leave that close to Reform and the Academic Year would have to be initiated during Plebe Summer through the chain of command and up to the Company Officer. The earlyer the better. I know that Plebes have been given permission to attend weddings of immediate family members, but given the parameters it would be a close call if the request was submitted late in the process.

I had this exact situation when I was going through Plebe Summer.

I wrote in my thought of the day that I needed to route a chit up to request permission to fly home for my sister's wedding the weekend before classes started. During one of the last weeks of Plebe Summer, my squad leader called my parents to get the information to put on the chit and routed it up the chain for me and it was approved.

I would say the best bet would be to go through your 2nd set squad leader during Plebe Summer, letting he/she know about it through a thought of the day or when you do your sit-down evaluations for 2nd set. It never hurts to try.

I think in general the Academy is pretty good about allowing people to go home for weddings of immediate family members.

tjm787,

That would definitely be the best course of action. It didn't even occur to me to put it in a "thought of the day" or counseling. Though, the CoC should ensure that there is a reasonable time to talk to the parents, to ensure a reasonable cost for the ticket.

I went home in the Fall for a wedding that wasn't immediate family but I was in it. I would say email the Company officer sometime over the summer and explain the situation since the plebe doesn't really have the chance too. Also the plebe should ask via thought of the day.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you book tickets that are refundable- just in case. Remember, there will be a new "Dant," on top of a Supe who has not been especially "family friendly"... so who's to say which way the wind will blow this year.

Book the reservations, follow the COC, say your prayers for some "fair winds and following seas"... and just in case, some trip insurance- hopefully you won't need it!
