Asian ethnicity.

Should I leave the race part blank?

I’m probably going to leave it blank for the schools I’m applying to because I’m Asian, which pretty much means auto reject. However, thousands of other Asians will also be leaving the race part blank too, so you’ll still have a lot of competition.

By the way, can admissions officers infer someone’s race based on last name, ECs, scores, etc? My last name doesn’t sound TOO Asian like other Asian last names such as Kim, Wang, Li, Zhang, etc. However, I’m still afraid that admissions might be able to tell that I’m Asian even if I leave my race out.

Pies: You imply that you’ll be auto rejected b/c you’re Asian. I disagree. I’m Chinese, had SATs about the 30th percentile of entering Freshmen at my HYP college, was ranked about 10th or 12th and had a 3.89 GPA. Got admitted to all colleges applied (2 ivies and 5 top engineering programs). I believe I was admitted b/c I was clearly a top scholar and had super leadership roles in my mostly African American HS.

If lots of Asians get rejected, it’s because there’s no super unique quality or characteristic that stands up and grabs the admissions reader.

Do you know how many Asians I’ve interviewed who look like this? Piano, violin, math-science superstar, hospital volunteer, tennis team. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Don’t just say it’s because you’re Asian. Be different – then you might get noticed. BTW: the Ivies admit tons of Asians – maybe not in proportion to how many apply but still – there are tons.

Asian does NOT mean auto- reject. AA is exagerrated on CC. they take your race into consideration a bit, and comparatively it’s a minor factor. also, adcoms are not allowed to infer your race from your name or any other part of the application if you choose not to report it- it’s against the law.
most people who choose not to report their race are probably Asian and some whites, so that pool might still be pretty competative, although not as much so as the Asian pool

hope I helped

Most top schools are ~20% Asian. Those students got in somehow. Clearly Asian ≠ auto-reject.

The OP most likely doesn’t think it will be an auto-reject, he probably thinks (correctly) that it may make it slightly more difficult to gain entry.

I totally agree with T26E4. Be different. It’s not all about “solid stats”…this isnt an EKG, it’s college. Show them why they should pick YOU out of all the other Asians that apply.

The Asian = auto reject comment was meant to be a joke :P

By the way, since we’re on the topic of being “different,” I’m wondering if its possible for a person with subpar stats (<3.7 and <2200) who shows him/herself to be very likable and unique to get into a ivy or top school. Anyone want to give an opinion?

You never know. They’d have to do an AMAZING job at that.
And thank you, young sir or madame for notifying me of my subpar stats. :)

definately. their was an example on a thread once. this girl with a 3.5 GPA and AWESOME EC’s got into harvard. so yeah.
