Leaving UVA

Im a rising junior transferring out of UVA. I plan on majoring in finance (or a business-related major if finance is not available)
UVA GPA: 3.5
HS GPA: 4.0 (top 5% out of 268)
Race: Hispanic (immigrant from Central America)
Several solid EC’s
Finance related experience (internship with a small firm in Chicago)

I am applying to Georgetown, Northwestern, UNC, NYU Stern, Cornell, UChicago (legacy), Tulane, Villanova, Tufts, Lehigh, Syracuse, UCLA, and Columbia (never applied to any of these schools)
What are my chances at these schools and what are my best options for breaking into IB or high level finance?
Thanks

You’re better off at UVA than several of those universities for the field you’re interested in.
Also, Cornell won’t even consider your application because you’re a rising junior.

Why do you want to leave?

I would consider Wake Forest - the Business School is amazing.

UVA finance placement is better than a lot of the schools you listed. I would try to stay there and transfer into McIntire

I am leaving UVA because I was deferred, then denied from McIntire. I have no interest in staying at UVA to study economics

Well . . . Columbia GS would be open to you in a snap, I predict. Same education as Columbia Col. but the financial aid may be an issue. I’m guessing that it’s not. You may want to check what finance classes are open to undergrads at Columbia or any school on your list. Columbia grad schools and depts are sometimes closed to undergrads and I’m not sure if there are finance classes offered outside of the B school. Law for example does not allow undergrads into their 1L classes (I doubt many places do).

^isn’t Columbia GS for adult students or students whose education was interrupted?

Well, you sound like a bad fit for UChicago, considering you wouldn’t be able to study business. The closest thing you could study at Chicago is Economics, and I’m guessing you probably wouldn’t enjoy it as it hugely consisting of math, which is more Economics than Business.

What about Loyola Maryland Business for a safety and Fordham ?

@jarrett211 the main reason I don’t have interest in studying economics at UVA is because their placement for IB and finance doesn’t compare to McIntire. In addition, big firms limit their OCR to McIntire kids so opportunities are very limited.
I did see that the closest thing to business at UChicago is Economics, but large firms acknowledge this, so kids with an Econ degree at UChicago still get high level finance positions. It’s not that I don’t want to study economics, I just don’t want to study Economics at UVA.

@MYOS1634 I’ll definitely check out Loyola MD, thanks for your input. As for Fordham, I would rather go with CUNY Baruch because I would get in-state tuition and their business program is just as solid.

Thanks for your input everyone!

While Baruch is as solid, the bureaucracy is a nightmare and the teaching level is hit-or-miss, plus it’s very hard to socialize since it’s 99% commuter - so Fordham would at least allow you to have some of the things you take for granted at UVA.
