How much does being a legacy impact your admissions chances? My dad and uncle both went to Dartmouth and were excellent swimmers. Just curious. Thanks!

My friend was semi recruited for soccer, his dad went there, his sister goes there, 3.8 UW, 1440 SAT, won prizes for writing, applied early, got deferred and then rejected, but he goes to UPenn now so he can't complain

still, being a legacy should help your chances

Dartmouth sets aside a certain number of legacy spots in the class, but usually the competition for these is as great as for the rest of the spots. So, while they have a certain number of legacies in each class, the acceptance rate of legacies is roughly the same as non-legacy students.

Thanks for your help!

Hey swimmerkp I'm a legacy too. You can look at The Dartmouth's articles which show that around 45% of the legacies get in Early Decision while around 28% get in Regular Decision. But as Nirvana pointed out, its still pretty difficult to get in.

45%??? That's almost half! Which articles did you get the stats from?

you can find them in the archives... keep in mind that early decision admits around 30% of applicants anyways... maybe more
