I have no interest in attending Penn, but I am curious. My great-grandfather donated a load of money to Penn (along with his brother, my great-great uncle). They have buildings and courtyards and such named after them. My grandfather attended, too, as has most of that side of the family. My uncle on the other side also graduated from Penn, though neither of my parents did. Out of curiousity, would this give me an edge in Penn admissions, even though neither of my parents attended?

I believe grandparents give you legacy status at Penn. The donation of money could give you what is called a "development" hook. The legacy status is a little help, especially if you apply ED, but not a huge benefit.

How about a 48% admit rate?

If you somehow let Penn know that you're related to your great-grandfather (in addition to being a legacy from your grandfather), I would consider it to be a considerable edge.

but...if you have "no interest in attending Penn," why does it even matter?

it could be quite helpful based on the money issue. But you shouldn't apply somewhere just because you could get in, you have to actually want to go there.

I thought there was a lot of discussion late last year on this forum about the legacy hook maybe only helping with ED. I could be wrong....

It doesn't sound like you have 'no interest' in applying to penn lol

It doesn't matter, I was just curious.

And I do have no interest in attending Penn, whatsoever, and I don't plan on applying. My heart is set on Brown and I hate Philly. You guys are making silly assumptions.

....so then i guess you're just bragging that you had rich great-grandparents?

Curiousity is interest, my young friend.

Brown is sweet though.

I was just really hoping that some kids on a message board would be impressed with me having rich great-grandparents, okay?!?!?!?!!?????!?!?!!

Curiousity doesn't translate to interest in attending a school, no.

Anyways, I heard that Penn kids sucked, anyways.

as one of the penn kids that supposedly sucks.... the best part of being prefrosh is the amazing people i'm friends with now... and the insanely tight kids i meet every night i'm on campus. i dunno what youre hearing from your equally supercilious friends... but seeing as youve neither hung out with penn kids nor been accepted into a single ivy league institution... i think you need to hold off on the bashing and maybe mature a bit, just a tip, cause i don't think brown wants kids who suck to apply there either

yeah, ditto, and if you don't think curiousity is like interest, you are stupid.

No, I don't think that I have bashed anyone in this thread. And I think that if people looked objectively at this thread, they would probably agree.

Curiousity is an interest in knowing whether I would be given a better chance at admission, sure. But does it translate to interest in actually attending Penn? No, that's silly. I stated numerous times that I have no desire or plans to apply to Penn. I don't know why you guys can't get that my dream school is different from yours.

fids: "Anyways, I heard that Penn kids sucked, anyways."

and then later down

fids "No, I don't think that I have bashed anyone in this thread."

Sure, you haven't bashed anyone. Except for all students at Penn. Come on man, at least keep track of what you have said previously before posting.

Are any of you guys Penn kids? I didn't think any of you were.

Anyways, I was just saying what I has heard. That isn't bashing them.

nahhh....... just cause my earlier post started out with "as one of the penn kids that supposedly sucks..." doesn't mean i'm in any way included in that category! and saying really ignorant and blatantly false generalizations about thousands of kids-- that's not bashing! nooo, why, i would not be attending an ivy league school where everyone sucks if i didn't even have the perspicacity to grasp the depths of your (completely unsubstantiated) statement.

GO QUAKERS CLASS OF 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, and your comment about being one of the Penn kids who supposedly sucks obviously came BEFORE my comment, right?

To prove a point:
I just heard a something - people who call themselves "fids" on the college confidential forums are unintelligent and envious of Penn kids. I am not saying that they are, that is just what I have heard.

This is of course not bashing you in any way. As I said, "people" say that, "they" say that. I have heard it around. I heard a lot of other things as well, but i'd rather not spread them on a public forum, as it might make you upset.

Now, fids, where did you hear that Penn kids suck? Did these people have only pre-conceived notions, or did they actually have any experience in the matter?
