Lehigh Biological & Physical Science Department Quality

I have heard many good things about Lehigh’s Business and Engineering schools, but how is Lehigh’s science departments? I have heard about Lehigh’s massive microscope lab and how it seperates Biochem and Molecular Bio into 2 majors, but that’s pretty much it. Does anyone have anything to say about Lehigh’s science department from experience, word of mouth, publication, etc?

im gonna reply so maybe more people will respond! I am not a fan of ranking in general because I think its pretty biased, nevertheless its a good starting place. I bet you already looked here but just in case you didn’t.

@poetrymusiclover thank you for the post, but I have seen these links before (thanks a bunch anyway!). I did find this link that kind of answered some of my questions: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/lehigh-university/944194-lehigh-science-program.html , but I would like to see a personal answer.

gotcha! good luck

Here is something that might be useful - a link to Lehigh student blogs from the Engineering Department. I assume you could ask these students to introduce you to some students in the Biology and Science Department. Maybe this won’t be helpful. I am just trying to figure out how to help. Let me know if it is or isn’t helpful. I know the waiting must be hard.

IndubitableDan - I would suggest you check out each individual department’s site. Biological Sciences has a very good one. There’s a wealth of information about research, scholarships, newsletters giving undergrad, grad and alumni updates. I think you can get a good idea of what each department is all about.

I would not get too caught up in rankings: Lehigh’s ranked plenty high enough overall at about 40 in US News. They have everything you need to have an outstanding college experience.

Face it…it’s about what YOU will do with the available opportunities and how YOU see yourself fitting in.

Good Luck and enjoy this next phase of your life!

Im currently a biochem major here in this great college. Lehigh as of right now is mostly known as an outstanding engineering school, as you probably already know. But as for the Bio departments, they are steadily growing in funds as more and more students like yourself are finding interest in the field. Lehigh is a college that will notice and will fund your research if you are a student that shows promise.

@CantEvenCollege (or anyone else), are the stories about grade deflation at Lehigh true, for your major?

The bio department is strong. The bio core is known to be very hard and challenging to do well in. A lot of engineers have to take it, so I have a lot of friends going through it now. In my experience, there is very minimal to no grade deflation at Lehigh. In all the general engineering and science classes I’ve taken so far, there’s been a curve in all of them, so really we’re not deflating… I guess you could say we’re inflating. @IndubitableDan

@lustudent2017, thanks a bunch. I’m going to have to work my behind off anyway, since I would like to go to med school (need a 3.6+ gpa w/ dept. hnrs.).

That’s totally do able. I have a few friends that were accepted this year into respectable PhD programs and medical schools with majors in both arts and sciences and engineering.

Any Physics majors or alums who can speak to the Physics Program experience?

My daughter is very interested in Physics and we visited Lehigh recently. She was very impressed overall. The only slight downside was she was not real impressed with the Physics physical plant. Building, lab space etc. when compared to a number of other schools. However wanted to get insight from people who have been through the program.

Any insight would be appreciated.

@InfoSec, here is the link to the physics course catalog page: http://catalog.lehigh.edu/coursesprogramsandcurricula/artsandsciences/physics
It has syllabus and course descriptions, as well as faculty info (you can contact them for more information).
