Lehigh Business v. Boston College Carroll School of Management

Im stuck between the two. I don't know which one is better to go for. I am going for an accounting major in whichever i eventually decide to choose. My problem with Lehigh is the Greek life and the "party" reputation it has, but my problem with BC is the fact that it is 2 percent Jewish, and I am Jewish. Any advice would be appreciated!

I’m in the exact same position as you. Let me just say, if you weren’t majoring in Accounting than from an academic and job perspective this would be a much more tougher decision. For me, both schools are at the same level from a prestige and reputation factor, so my decision is going to be on a social life and fit point of view. Academically though, I like Lehigh a little more since for their Business degree you get a Bachelor of Science in Business Economics as opposed to a Bachelors in Business Administration at BC. Lehigh also gives you the opportunity to get a Compuster Science and Business degree or an intergrated degree in Business Engineering So I feel like Lehigh has more offerings.

From an accounting point of view, absolutely go to Lehigh. I’ve been to campus several times and have heard from many people “DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT TO MAJOR IN FINANCE OR GO INTO INVESTMENT BANKING” as this is simply not as strong as the other majors. If you are a strong student and that is your interest and aboslutely, positively love Lehigh, then go for it, just know that it will be a bit tougher.

Everyone told me how great their accounting program was. It is by far the BEST MAJOR in the Business school and a top 5 program in the country. All of the big accounting firms come to recruit at Lehigh so I strongly recommend you consider it. A profersor and a student told me that if you get a GPA like a 2.8 you’re guranteed a job out of Lehigh. So from an academic and job point of view, the choice is easy go to Lehigh.

From a fit and life style point of view that is up to you. Lehigh is a party school, but not in the same sense as the larger state football schools. It has a work hard play hard enviornment, but you can still live in the CHOICE housing where there is no alcohol. Also, let me say that when I went to visit Lehigh during the Diversity Achievers Program, I was a senior in high school, so of course they couldn’t take us to parties or take us drinking. We were forced to do other activities that I was not too fond of, but let me tell you that plenty of Lehigh students joined us in these activities on the weekends, so if drinking or partying is not your style, you will have other choices. Boston deffinetly trumps Bethlehem and Allentown, but you will be on campus for most of the time.

Good luck with your decision. I am leaning towards Lehigh, but part of me still want to go to BC.

Im right there with you. I think im going to go to lehigh, but its so hard to give up BC

I’m clearly biased, but for any business major go to BC. My son will be going to Lehigh (since BC doesn’t have an engineering program). BC’s program and reputation in business is top notch. The undeniable fact, though, is that most students will be Catholic.

Sent from my DROID2 using CC

BC is ranked number 14 in business, Lehigh number 20. There is partying at BOTH schools - I live in the Boston area and laughed pretty hard reading the first post indicating that Lehigh was a party school, implying BC was not. haha!

Anyway, I think you will do well at either, if you plan to live in New England, I would say BC has a local edge, however, if you are looking towards Wall Street, I would personally give Lehigh the edge.

They are so close, I think you need to go where you feel the best fit. Good luck and congrats on two great choices.

@mumof2boys can you please tell me where I said BC wasn’t a a party school? I read over my long post twice and couldn’t find anything implying that. Also you can’t put Boston College on the same Level as Lehigh’s for partying. It was recently ranked the #3 party school in the nation and the #1 for most alcohol consumed by student by the Princeton Review. Also I do think that BC is deffinetly not as fun as Lehigh and the on campus social life is not nearly as strong. Lehigh has great Greek Life and BC has “upper classmen apartments called modular housing” as their way to make up for this.

“My problem with Lehigh is the Greek life and the “party” reputation it has” - key word “problem” implying that it is somehow very different than BC. There is really no reason to get defensive when you place statements on a board and ask for opinions, I gave mine. Sorry you don’t agree.

My opinion is based on personal knowledge of both schools, my son (a non partier) attends Lehigh and 20-30 kids from my son’s high school go to BC each year (as well as many of my closest friends).

haha whoops it looks like you were referring to martyb’s comment and not mine. I was getting confused.

since your son at lehigh didnt join greek life and isnt a partier, did he find it easy to make a life for himself considering lehigh is surrounded by all of that?

My son is a junior that is not Greek or a big partier. He loves Lehigh and has no shortage of things to do (after studying of course). There are lots of school-sponsored activities on weekends and the occasional trip to NYC or Philly. They spend a lot of time going to the local South Bethlehem restaurants but that’s about as far as they go in town. You will always be able to find something to do.

martyb123,

My situation is very similar to rsdad’s son and mumof2boyz’s son. Campus life doesn’t revolve around Greek life and drinking. Lehigh’s party scene is there if you want it but not in your face - I don’t bother with it and I’m still involved and have a good social life.

BC is a far worse in terms of “partying” than Lehigh, so prepurm1216 is correct in that regard.

BC1980 may be right about the huge Catholic presence at BC, but I don’t think religious denominations should play a big part in your decision-making. Pick the school with the best academic fit.

Does Lehigh have a larger Jewish population than BC? Or is it just that you are concerned about the %Catholic at BS as opposed to non-Jewish at Lehigh?
Perhaps you could ask someone at BC’s Hillel organization how active their organization is and how they feel about the community.

I had a Jewish friend who went there for grad school and she said it didn’t feel very Catholic to her at all. Except for the occasional crucifix :-)

As a low income minority that went to private school and will be going to a private college, I find it somewhat laughable when I hear a Jewish student concerned about being a minority at a school. Get over it. For once in your life you will be a minority at BC, and just religiously. How do you think Black or Latino students feel when they are constantly around a majority of uppler class/upper middle class white population at any private institution. Embrace the difference, and move on!

My dad came out of Lehigh working for Goldman, and then Harvard Business. @prepurm1216 claimed that Lehigh isn’t good for investment banking but the alumni network is fantastic, you’d be surprised.
