<p>Lehigh Valley International Airport
does anybody travel in or out of this airport on the way/from Lafayette?
is it a good option?</p>
<p>I’ve never been to the airport myself, but if it helps I know that Lafayette provides transportation to/from the airport for major school breaks. I’d check to see if you can fly to the Lehigh Valley Airport from whatever airport is close to you. Depending where you live, there is also a private bus that my D has used to come home for some breaks (goes from Westchester up to Boston) and the school also provides shuttle service to the Easton bus station.</p>
<p>Isn’t Newark airport about one hour away? When we visited 4 yrs ago it seemed we were told Newark was the airport of choice.</p>
<p>MADad , newark is a lot further and I hear that the TSA is a combo of attitude and harassment (also stealing ipads and such). is the security theater a little more benign at lehigh valley?better/easier parking etc… (less flight options I know but maybe overall a better starting point?)</p>
<p>I’ve always used JFK. You can either take the transbridge shuttle to NYC, and then take subway+airtrain to reach JFK, or take Transbridge directly to JFK. No problems whatsoever.</p>
<p>sixstring wouldn’t jfk be even further then newark?
let alone the entire TSA thing at JFK?

<p>I’ve flown out of LVI on many occasions and it’s a breeze getting in and out of due to its small size and easy access to the highway. It’s a short cab ride from campus (20 minutes 14 miles). I would recommend taking an early flight because if you’re on the last flight and it’s cancelled, there are not too many other options, as in none… The other drawback is that you’re going to have to connect out of ABE/LVI unless you’re going to Orlando or Detroit… It’s MUCH easier than getting to Newark…</p>
<p>EDIT-ABE- Allentown,Bethlehem- code for airline tag</p>
<p>My son flies out of the airport to and from school. It’s nice that the school provides free transportation both ways. He flies United through either Chicago or Washington DC. He could fly direct (to LAX) through either Newark or Philadelphia but this is easy on him.</p>
makes things easier at LVIA

Couple things to consider:
Transbridge Bus Lines has [regular service](http://transbridgelines.com/newark-airport-schedule.html) between downtown Easton and Newark Airport (EWR). Takes approximately 1.5 hours, varies depending on time of day. You can fly pretty much anywhere from Newark.
Alternatively, you can fly from Lehigh Valley Airport in Allentown (ABE). ABE is closer to Easton, but has fewer options.
One weird option is that United offers cost-effective connecting “flights” from ABE to EWR that are [actually on buses](https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g46671-i866-k6851911-o10-United_Airlines_Bus_Service_from_Newark_airport_to_Allentown-Newark_New_Jersey.html). Yeah, I know this sounds crazy, but it’s true. You board a United Express Bus at ABE, which goes directly to the United terminal at EWR. I think you still have to go thru TSA at EWR, but not sure. The United Bus “flights” don’t seem to show up on third-party travel services like Expedia, but you will see them if you search for flights from ABE at United.com
This is very interesting - my daughter’s roommate flies directly from Lehigh Valley Airport to Orlando where she lives and it’s very easy. My daughter’s been taking the chartered bus directly from school to Boston which is easy but looooong, and requires that we drive an hour to pick her up at midnight each time (it’s a 7 hour bus ride and they leave after classes…). I looked once at LVI but the price and the necessity to switch in Newark anyway didn’t make it terribly attractive. But intrigued I just checked the United bus option that @corbett mentioned - picking a random flight on Dec 19, it cost just under $230 - that’s the bus from LV airport to Newark and then flight to Boston. That same flight from Newark to Boston cost $49, which means they are charging just under $200 for the bus portion! Crazy since the transbridge bus from Easton to Newark airport is only $29!
Crazy!!
My impression is that the United Bus from ABE becomes a more attractive option if you are connecting for a long flight in EWR. In fact, I’ve heard that in some cases, United actually charges less if you book a long flight starting from ABE, instead of starting at EWR. I realize that this makes no sense.
My son is doing this tomorrow to get to Ohio. Was cheaper than booking direct flight from Newark. Very weird. We will see how it ends up
newark airport is in the bottom tier of airports in the U.S.(IMO)
just driving up the road to Lehigh Valley Airport is always preferable.
Lived in the Lehigh Valley area for 22 years. LVIA is easy to fly in and out of and flights are less often delayed/cancelled than from PHL/EWR. Lafayette is around 20 mins drive from LVIA. My D2 studies in Atlanta. She “flies” into LVIA whenever possible as it is easier for her mom to pick her up from there instead of Philly or Newark. United has a bus service from EWR and the tickets are cheaper from ATL to/from ABE.
Odd, so seems the prices are crazy for LVIA to Boston (via Newark), otherwise, quite reasonable for other locations. Too bad
