Planes, Trains, and (Buses??)

How do Lafayette kids get home for breaks?

What airport is closest? Are they shuttles to get there?

What is the situation for trains and buses?

D would be traveling back and forth to New England (either Providence or Boston works)

Thanks for any info CC can provide.

There is a bus station (Greyhound) in the town, actually within walking distance if one is not carrying a heavy load. I think most people fly out of Newark or Phillie, and take a bus to get to either place. Justin certainly knows the details on that one.

There is an airport (allentown-bethlehem-easton:ABE) I think, but no idea about flights....

Newark is maybe 70 minutes by bus (if that much)....straight on Rt. 78E......

As fencersmother says, there is regular commuter bus service out of Easton to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC. From there it's a quick subway or taxi ride to Amtrak at Penn Station (or Metro North at Grand Central).

Lehigh Valley International Airport is only 15-20 minutes from Lafayette and has direct flights to Philly, Newark, Cleveland, DC, Cincinnati and several other cities. It's not the cheapest place in the world to fly to/from. More flights and better fares can be had at Newark Liberty and Philadelphia International.

As far as I've seen many people who live within 3-4 hours of driving distance get someone to pick them up on campus. Others take buses or fly. I am an international student, so I have to take a bus to JFK or Newark (about 150 minutes and an hour, respectively). There is assistance available for people who need their suitcases etc to be transported to the bus station, which is about 5 minutes from campus, but down a steep hill.

In the case of Boston, I do not believe the Lehigh airport has flights that go there but I may be wrong. The best way would probably be the way hudsonvalley suggested, Transbridge runs many buses every day to NYC (it's about an hour 10 minute ride) and from there you can get pretty much where you need to go.

DS takes the Transbridge bus to Newark airport and either catches plane or Amtrak train from there to DC.

When are students allowed to have cars on campus? When I went to a different college a hundred years ago, freshmen were not permitted to have cars, but all others were allowed. Does Laf. have a similar policy?

Minky,

From the College website:

Am I allowed to being a car to campus?
First year students are not allowed to bring cars on campus. Campus parking is administered by the Office of Public Safety. Specific parking questions may be directed to the Parking Coordinator at (610) 330-5851.

Just to add to that, sophomores can have cars registered with the College ($210 yearly fee), but their cars must be parked in an off-campus parking lot about two miles north of campus. These students need to take campus transportation to get to their vehicles. Juniors and seniors can have cars registered and parked on campus ($320 yearly fee).

In response to the OP, one Muhlenberg parent organizes a charter bus service for New England students at Lehigh Valley schools during break. Laf typically gets given its own coach, which will pick students directly up on campus and make several stops in CT and MA. The price is determined by the number of students riding the bus. I took this bus home and back to school over spring break, and it was very convenient.

WaWAPard--

Thanks for the info. Other schools (Colgate, Bucknell) do something similar and made those two schools more attractive to my older daughter. This info makes Lafayette look better to D #2!
