My essay is in its final stages of revising. I've already consulted my teachers and guidance counselor. But I've always heard that essays should be 500 words. Mine is about 750. There's no way I can cut it down, because if I do, it will lose its substance and how I present myself to the readers. Do essays get cut-off if they exceed 500 words? I've read different answers on here...

You will see different answers. When my D submitted her Common App, there was no limit. Things could change.

I REALLY want to caution you that 750 words on a 500 word essay is simply too much. There are going to be kids you are competing against that will have traveled the world, cured diseases, and they are keeping it to 500 words.

As I’ve said before, I hate cutting down on finished writings too. The best way to do it will be to consider this an excellent first draft and rewrite it all over again with the same ideas in your head; it might just turn out better.

750 words are too many, yes.
