I was currently deciding on which laptop to buy and I have decided I will go with Lenovo Thinkpad T series. Now the T series has two models the T61p and the T61. The cost difference between the two is substantial and the only differences I noticed were that the T61p was offering a higher resolution screen and better graphics card, the NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256 MB) as compared to NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (128 MB).

Does anyone know about other major differences between the two models? And which model would you suggest I opt for (considering I do play games, but not a lot)? Also there is a current sale on Lenovo till the 4th of August and this is better than the one that ended yesterday. Should I wait for another sale after August 4 (expecting it to be better) or buy a laptop now?

Yep, the main difference is the videocard. Both are Quadros, which are professional-level cards. In any case, the extra cost DOES NOT justify the improvements, unless you absolutely need them.

WUXGA on a 15.4" screen is extremely tiny. Then, with WSGXA+, which is also quite small, the option is available on both models.

The NVS 140M is equivalent to a GeForce 8400, and the FX 570M is equivalent ot a GeForce 8800. Huge performance difference between the two, but unless you need the ultimate gaming experience, the NVS 140M will do very well.

I suggest waiting for the new Thinkpad T400/T500 though. Those will feature much better specs.

I have a T61 and the graphics are excellent.

It's hard to tell right now about the sales that Lenovo has. When I bought mine a few months ago, I rushed because the sale was about to "end"; as it turns out, it didn't. It extended to April. And then extended some more. And then extended some more. They're really trying to squeeze as much they can out of this model/series. That, and the fact that they're introducing more models and a new series (getting rid of the IBM logos and now putting solely Lenovo on their products), they very well may discontinue this model soon, even the entire T series, as they did for others. With this in mind, I'd say that the deal they have is about as good as it's going to get. Assuming that you don't want Linux, you can get it for about $900, which is a pretty good price given the high quality of ThinkPads. Even if there is a better sale to come, I doubt it will be much better.

In fact their new offerings are looking beter and better, especially with the fact that the majority if not all Nvidia 8400 and 8600 cards are faulty
