less than a week...

okay so there's like 4 days left here before we move out and i just wanted to know what new freshmen should do before we head off to umd. like, reserve textbooks? read about a health plan, lol? also, i just got back from vacation so i'd like to know how to pay for my tuition. it sounds dumb but i accepted my loans and stuff and i heard u can then pay online w/ ur credit card? when/how can you do that?

<a href="http://www.testudo.umd.edu/Financials.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.testudo.umd.edu/Financials.html</a></p>

Then click "student account inquiry and bill payment." I already got all my textbooks through outside sources.

Wow, we're really almost there. I'm really going to college. Heh.

lol yeah i know, i dont even know if i grasped it yet. but yeah, thanks! and i have to reserve my textbooks at the school's book store i suppose since i'm dumb and forgot to order it from amazon. now it's too latee =/

Whiskers,

Most teachers won't require the textbook for the first week or two of classes. Instead of the University Bookstore, use Bookholders to save money (if you need them right away) or Amazon.com w/ expedited shipping if you can wait.

As far as insurance is concerned, you need to check out what coverage your parents' health plans provide. Most will cover the children until they're 21 or out of college.

If you need your own insurance plan, you need to go to the University Health Center and enroll.

make sure you've got everything planned out with your roommate(s) as far as who's bringing what so that you don't drag up two TVs, two fridges, two window fans, etc.

question about sending things to umd (in general)- if say my parents send me a package, will it be sent right to the front desk at my dorm? At orientation my mom heard something about how packages are sent to some building across from the main campus and we have to go pick them up there- is that just for insured packages, or all packages that arent flat envelopes?

kurplunk,

I don't know if it changed over the past year, but in 2004/2005, the policy was packages were signed for at the Front Desk, and then an e-mail was sent to you to pick it up. There are certain exceptions where it is held at a building on campus that you have to go to and pick it up.
