Textbooks?

Hi everyone. Move in day is in about 2 weeks, wooo. But yeah, I'm just wondering if it's necessary to have your textbooks ready for the first day of class. I received an offer from the NYU bookstore saying they can ship the books I need prior to move-in day, but I didn't take up this offer. I figured I could somehow manage to purchase the textbooks I need by other [cheaper] means. Also, my student advisor stated as an art major I wouldn't need many books, especially since my courseload is mostly studio classes.

My friends who are also going to NYU already have their books and are basically telling my how stupid I am for not doing the book deal. Were they right?

Paranoia isn't the way to live your life from day to day, but I can't help it!

We did the shipping program and got books yesterday. BUT, they didn't send 2 of the books. You can now go online and see what your books are going to be. I may try to find the 2 they didn't send (they said I didn't get these because they didn't have the complete list from professors when they pulled our order).

oh i see, thank you

I think I'm going to get book lists from the professor the minute my schedule comes out and order them from half.com. If it doesn't come in time, I'll rent books from the library in the meanwhile.

You know, someone should start a textbook rental company. You charge like $25 a semester plus a small refundable deposit and then you just get the book for the semester. Cuts down on costs, and waste. If someone starts such a company, I expect a fat check coming my way!!!

You don't really need them for the first day of classes. You may get a few chapters assigned on the first day but you can always catch up on those and it's usually not a lot because professors understand that not everyone has their books and that people will be transferring in/out of the class the first few weeks. Some professors place more emphasis on books than others, people go entire semesters without opening up a book for a certain class.

If you see that you need the book right away, you can go to the bookstore and pick it up, and return it once the (cheaper) one you ordered comes in. However, be careful because they have a deadline for returning books (the date will be posted all over the bookstore when you come in or you can ask one of the cashiers). Also, expect long lines in the bookstore during welcome week.

The bookstore still does not have one of my books in stock.

I also hate how these professors order books that are specifically only for NYU. egghh. I'm tryna save money here, guys.

Well doesn't really matter because some books at amazon are cheaper even AFTER you factor in overnight shipping.

does bobst library have textbooks that we can photocopy while waiting textbooks to be delivered?
