It is unfortunate that you did not get financial aid. I have heard that EDers have less chance of financial aid packages because colleges have to have enough money to give out to everyone, eders and regulars.

The dean's scholarship seems to me to be based on merit. I have seen no mention of it dealing with financial status or legacy status. I got it and I certainly was not a legacy.

If it is too expensive, BU might let you out to go to a state university, which might be a viable option for the first couple of years.

I don't want to get into the whole long story of this. I am happy for everyone who received Dean's or whatever. I applied ED, because BU is where i want to be. My stats are not outstanding, but they meet the ones you will read under average Dean's stats, and I was led to believe that ED kids were given preference for scholarships, especially if they had no financial need. Our EFC is like $44,000. My point is that the stats for the Dean's scholarship are all over the place on this post--from 1500 sat to 1280, 3.5 gpa--check out the accepted post. I was told that my stats were not high enough, because the average stats went up--not so.

it's really unfortunate for admitted BU students to have a dilemma of whether to go or not because of financial problems. I mean I was accepted into BU with a grant of like $4400 to a 42,000 dollar school. I called them up and indirectly they told me that it is a merit based financial aid along with a need based. I mean this just defeats the purpose of financial aid. I am kind of angry, but I can't do anything...i guess no BU for me!

did anyone else have a problem with the fafsa going through to bu?? ive been having sooo much trouble trying to get it in bc i keep trying to resubmit and it doesnt work. i tried again, but i'm just really afraid that i wont receive any aid at all. i was accepted and i checked online, but when you get your acceptance packet in the mail, does it already come with the financial aid stuff? or does financial aid come separate?? also, if you dont have your fafsa in, what does it affect? just your fed and state loans or does it affect merit based scholarships as well??? or will they just not award any financial aid at all? THANKS A BUNCH!

hey, i'm in the same boat. BU is giving me a heck of a time in the financial aid process. They say that my Fafsa is incomplete, but every other college said it is and after calling Fafsa, the federal government says it's complete too. BU won't have any of this, and the saga continues for me. What a bureaucracy. This also makes me antsy because i'm afraid that the aid won't be as good as a result of this. this is all assuming that i got in, because my applicantlink still says "review complete", but no decision yet. so frustratng.

lilly1...i just read your post and it totally hit home. im also from a middle class family and accepted to COM too...and i got the univ. scholarship and $500 in grants...it only took the cost of bu down to like $29,000 a year. my parents are paying for some of it...but ill have about 10,000 a year to make up myself. and that's what scares me. like i will be poor...and working a LOT. But i guess if this is what has to be done.....

My acceptance package came with the financial aid letter (2 of them, in fact). I had trouble with my FAFSA too. BU e-mail, snail mailed, and called me like 3 weeks about missing FAFSA and other stuff but I got it in in time.

I just hope that it is worth it. I guess even though this was my absolute number 1 choice, I'm sorry I applied ED. I was counting on at least a founder's grant. I was told by admissions that the only "true merit awards " do not include the Dean's or Founders--there is some need involved in the FG, and that I would not receive any scholarships or aid because their funds were limited and that they needed to give to those in greater need. I did receive some EA offers of substantial merit, but chose to stick with BU. The deal with me is that I will have to pay the last year's tuition with loans. So, even though I scheduled an appt with financial aid during the open house for COM, I'm going to forget about the $, and be happy that I will be attending BU. I know there are alot of others who are left with a large financial need, who received only a small portion of aid. I spent the last couple of months furiously applying to scholarships on fast web, etc. Alot of those require financial need also. It will all work out.

For some of you - I feel your financial pain.. and for other, I HATE you! (haha)

I got accepted to BU, but with no financial aid or scholarships that I know of. I guess that's what my dad gets for having a good job and saving for college. (middle-class syndrome) Anyways, I am having a heck of a time deciding where to go - so far, got accepted at Smith, Mt. Holyoke, BU, Stonehill - and all are offering me the same fin. aid... ZIP!

Oh, how I wish my dad had not filled out the Fafsa.. (lol).

I don't know where to go to school! Ahhhh!!

Cat13---parent here...you'll see our story on a previous thread. Son accepted last yr., 1420 plus outstanding GPA and SAT2s in the high 700s but no merit letter came with the acceptance even though it seemed he fit the profile for university scholar. Well long story short I sent an email asking if that meant he would not receive any merit aid or did news sometimes come seperate from the acceptance---they confirmed that it does and explained that a letter would come within 2 wks---so what I am saying is that just because you haven't gotten a merit aid letter with your acceptance that doesn't mean one isn't forthcoming. For one of the 3 merit scholarships BU takes finaces into account so 2 kids with a 1500 SAT may be treated differently and they may take the economic profile into consideration and choose the one with less family income. We value education and lived more frugally so we can send our kids to college and even though middle class families get the short end of the stick in this process I am grateful that we can are in that category compared to some stories on CC of families that are in genuine dire straits. Loans after you graduate can be really spread out so don't be afraid about the debt, its worth it. At any rate if your stats are high and you have not received a merit award letter and it will really tip the scales in your decision making don't be afraid to call or email BU and ask about it and be sure to let them know that you are going to attend since the last thing a school wants to do is hand out merit offers to kids who are choosing to go elsewhere. Our s chose BU over so called more competeive schools and the half tuition scholarship helped him make that decision so given our experience it can't hurt to call or email them and just ask if this means you aren't going to get merid aid or if it means you may hear a little later. BTW we couldn't wait 2 wks since we had to make plans to attend one of the accepted students days so we called after a week and they got the letter to us ASAP when we explained it was necessary to know for our travel plans..

Dogs, Is the Dean's scholarship one that takes financial need into consideration, as well as merit? I never could get an absolute straight answer out of financial aid or admissions--I'm still puzzled as to why RD kids with stats lower than mine received Dean's scholarships. Is it another way to grant financial assistance to high acheivers?

I believe it is the Deans one but if you go on the BU web site and research under merit scholarships you can read each description and it will clarify that question.
