Let's discuss financial aid

I got 7000 in merit scholarship, 30000 in grants, and 5000 in loans.

how do u find out the EFC?

they offered me 41k in total (included loan and work study), w/ out loan and work study i have around 36k.

I think the EFC that people are referring to is from the FAFSA.

I got accepted to BU RD and was moved from CGS to CAS, which was fine with me... but for financial need I was only given around $3000 in loans. Unfortunately, I have a pretty low EFC and that amount is not even near enough for me to go. I dont understand how BU does there financial aid. It looks like they only give away thier grants and scholarships to people with near perfect GPA, SATs and what not, regardless of the others who need financial aid. Kinda wierd.

I feel your pain. I think that if BU did not want you that you would have been rejected. This is such a big business, and so many things come into play--male vs female, what part of the country/world, ethnicity, legacy, talent etc, etc. Just to make you feel better, middle class families like mine also get screwed. We get no financial aid, and no normal working middle class families can afford $42,000 a year. BU has been the school, program, (COM), I have wanted to attend for the last two years. However, I will have thousands of dollars of loans when I graduate. My parents want me to follow my dreams, but there has been some tension, because I would have received merit elsewhere, and merit is all that I will get in aid. One never knows, but I hope it is worth it- Only as weird as it seems to people whose financial aid was not met, I will be truly poor while attending BU. I am gonna have to make some major lifestile changes and get a job!!!! Anyway, I know how you feel.

Yeah...BU was terrible at giving aid! I got a dean's scholarship and no other grants! AHH! How am I supposed to afford all of that!?!?! That is insane! It's especially insane when schools of a higher caliber are giving me more merit aid! Oh well...goodbye BU, you lost me!

cboryca22, my thoughts EXACTLY. it seems that those of us who were awarded scholarships got screwed with financial aid. it's as though BU feels it shouldn't help us pay anymore b/c they gave us scholarships.

i also second your statement about better schools offering more aid. it makes no sense to me, as i was expecting to consider BU based on their aid package. they lost me too.

I think they may use "need-based" grants as a fuzzy form of merit aid. My scholarship was modest-- 7000/year-- but my grant was way more than I need, and I have a friend who goes there on a similar package.

oh man, i guess my family got REALLY luck on financial aid. I got $31,025 and my twin bro got $38,635

yeah it seems to go either way. some people got a lot, while others only got loans. i got a scholarship, but they failed to cover the rest with grants and such. bascially, my efc was about 4000 and i'll have to pay about 15,000 with loans and work study included.

I too got a very generous package--32K in grants and 4K in loans--
By the way,

are any of you guys accepting workstudy? Do you think it will be too hard to balance work-study with academics?

i know i'm accepting workstudy, simply because it will be putting money in my pocket and every little bit towards tuition helps. and from what my friends at other schools have experienced, usually the jobs that are done through workstudy aren't too difficult. for instance, a common job is monitoring a computer lab, which many of my friends have, and they just do their school work while working.

oh man...bu i think lost me as well haha. i received like 4-5 k in grants and 2-2.5 k in loans. i don't know how im suppose to afford an expensive school like bu. i was really like thinking about going there too, but i never did worry on the tuition problem. its pretty sad really. its like what lilly said. how does a middle working class family afford 42 grand. im still going to call em up!

Oh yeah- The plight of the middle class!

"Oh yeah- The plight of the middle class!"

That's why I vote Dem!! :D

Yeah, I don't think the work study is that big a deal. Plus it's not like I have a choice - I just won't bring my XBox to college right off (at least until second semester) and I'll just have to really have self discipline in getting all my school work done.

Work study in general is pretty easy, from what I've seen at some colleges in touring. You will have a chance to get schoolwork done on the job.

You guys get all this information by clicking "Financial Assistance Status" after you log in, right?

No, Financial Assistance Decision is what you click.

Theres no Financial Assistance Decision for me :( I sent out my business/farm supplement the other day so I guess they have to review that before considering giving any aid to me.

Grrrr...i dont understand these colleges. I guess they think our families should not eat and live on the street while were in college because thats what it seems like.
Me and my twin brother's EFCs are 17,000 each, but BU doesn't seem to be giving either of us any need based aid. We both got $10,000 Dean Scholarships but thats it.
Ummm...yea like my family has $60,000 a year to spare?? :-/ i dont think so...
